Description of Work

The purpose of this position is to teach content focused on improving basic skills in core mathematics areas through individual, small group, and whole class instruction, providing targeted remediation and enrichment as needed. The intent of this position is to deliver direct math instruction to offenders aged 18 to 22 to support their attainment of a high school equivalency diploma.

Salary Grade: Based on NCDPI Salary Schedule

Salary to be determined by qualifications and years of experience within a range of $49,200 to $84,948.

This is a full-time, permanent and continuing position (40 hours per week) with state benefits. This is a year-round position.

Management preference for candidates who can show evidence of:

Certification in multiple subjects (e.g., math and science).
Experience with educational practices for at‑risk students.
Experience preparing lessons aligned to College and Career Readiness Standards (CCRS), Common Core Standards (CCS), and the NC Standard Course of Study to meet student needs.
Experience teaching math across varied academic performance levels.
Experience using diverse instructional methods that follow best practices and meet student needs.
Experience developing, implementing, and communicating classroom management plans that address diverse behaviors and provide supports for academic and behavioral issues.
Experience keeping accurate records (attendance, grades, formative and summative performance, assessment results, anecdotal notes).
Experience aggregating, disaggregating, and interpreting standardized tests and assessment (formative and summative) data effectively.
Strong oral and written communication with stakeholders and collaborative work with colleagues to support school culture.
Experience using technology productivity tools and software (including Microsoft Office: Word, Excel, etc.).
Flexibility in expectations and instructional plans in a changing environment.

This position will be a main point of contact providing support and instruction in core academic areas to students in pursuit of attaining a high school equivalency diploma. This position is located within the academic school at Foothills Correctional Institution, Morganton, NC (Burke County).

Reporting to the School Principal, the Math Teacher is a core member of the academic team responsible for implementing and monitoring the school’s vision, mission, values, and goals. The teacher must be skilled at organizing and delivering math curriculum to groups of students of all ages, creating a flexible program and a learning environment that supports each student’s abilities and personal growth within a minimum and close custody male correctional facility. The teacher will also perform any additional duties assigned by the principal.

Job responsibilities of this position include, but are not limited to, the following:

Designing math lessons and materials using best practices with clear learning targets and measurable goals aligned to Common Core, College and Career Readiness (CCRS), and NC standards, adapting instruction for students with varied maturity and academic levels using verbal and visual teaching methods.
Providing group and individual instruction informed by formative and summative assessment data to meet individual needs, encourage active and appropriate participation, reach academic goals, and support students’ transitions within school, the correctional system, and back to the community.
Setting and enforcing student behavior standards that enable effective classroom and school participation and align with the schoolwide behavior plan.
Collaborating with teachers and other school personnel on student caseloads and effective instructional strategies.

Compensation for all certified educators working for NCDAC in school educator positions is based on the NC Department of Public Instruction’s Salary Schedule. This schedule is approved annually by the NC General Assembly and sets pay based on the educator's years of experience and education level.

About the Department of Adult Correction (DAC)

The North Carolina Department of Adult Correction is responsible for the care, custody, and supervision of all adults sentenced after conviction for violating North Carolina laws. This department includes State Prisons, Correction Enterprises, the Division of Community Supervision, and the Division of Rehabilitation & Reentry.

About Foothills Correctional Institution

Foothills Correctional Institution is located in Morganton, NC (Burke County). Opened in 1994, Foothills Correctional Institution houses close-custody male offenders, primarily between 18 and 25 years of age, in 712 single cells. Offenders in close custody are housed at the main institution while the detached Minimum Custody Unit, located behind the main unit, houses adult minimum custody offenders; close custody is the highest security level a prison in North Carolina can have. The facility offers a wide variety of programs, including educational and vocational programs, as well as a variety of job assignments; Foothills Correctional is home to one of the prison system's four schools for younger offenders.

Minimum Education and Experience

The successful applicant must demonstrate the knowledge, skills, and abilities for this role. Applicants must document that they possess all of the following within the application:

Documented ability to teach mathematics effectively at multiple levels using diverse instructional strategies.
Documented ability to manage classroom behavior and maintain order using behavioral management techniques.
Documented ability to use formative and summative assessment data (formal and informal) to identify, diagnose, evaluate, assess, and address individual student learning needs.
Documented ability to write education plans for both groups and individual students.

The successful applicant must possess a bachelor’s degree or above (from an appropriately accredited college) in the teaching area associated with this position and must hold a current (non-expired) State of North Carolina Professional Educator’s License (Class Code A, M, S, or D) with certification in the area of mathematics at the middle or high school level or be eligible to obtain an Emergency or Residency teaching license or Provisional Certification in the aforementioned certification area(s). This must be indicated in and attached to your application.

Eligibility requirements for the Emergency and Residency Licenses are:

Emergency One-Year License Eligibility: the candidate must

(1) hold a bachelor's degree with 18 hours of coursework relevant to the requested licensure area (but has not completed a recognized educator preparation program) and

(2) does not qualify for a Residency License

Residency License Eligibility: the candidate must

(1) hold a bachelor's degree from an accredited college/university;

(2) have completed 24 hours of coursework relevant to the requested area of licensure OR passed the content area examination relevant to the requested licensure area that has been approved by the State Board of Education;

(3) be enrolled in a recognized Educator Preparation Program (EPP).

This position is governed under Chapter 115c, Elementary and Secondary Education, and Chapter 126 of the NC State Human Resources Act.

In addition to the listed knowledge, skills, and abilities, applicants must also demonstrate that the minimum education and experience requirements have been met.
