We are looking for a skilled Veterinary Technician to join the team at our Waterford location. We are looking for a certified or licensed veterinary technician. Applicants for this key position must have prior experience working in a shelter or veterinary clinic. This position will be cycling through our surgical rotation so surgery skills are a must! We are looking to get our surgery suite up and running. This position will assist in the provision of quality medical and surgical care of animals including, but not limited to, performing routine preventative care, administering medications, assessing patient progress, running basic laboratory tests, surgical prep and post-op care, induction and monitoring of anesthetized patients, answering adopters' and fosters' questions about medical conditions and home care, and performing end of life care when necessary. Applicants must be detail focused and comfortable using technology to maintain accurate electronic medical records. An ideal candidate is a self-starter with the ability to think critically to be a stakeholder in the patients' treatment plans and care. Candidates must be prepared to work well independently and as part of a team to ensure timely, quality medical care for all of our animals. This position will work primarily in the Waterford Shelter medical department but may occasionally work at other locations (Wilton, Newington, Fox Memorial Clinic).

Position Overview
Title: Shelter Veterinary Technician

Overview: This full time position is benefit eligible. This position is ideal for who is able to deal with different communication styles. We are looking for a creative, customer service oriented individual who can work well within a team. Interested individuals must be able to handle multiple priorities and enjoy a busy environment. This position requires one to have a knowledge of animal handling and medical care as well as have a basic understanding of the different types of companionship animals. This position has a five day per week schedule which includes one weekend day.

Qualifications


Requirements

  • Education: Associates Degree in animal science or related field.
  • Experience: 2-3 years if certified. 3-5 years as experience if not certified. Must have worked as a vet tech, not a vet assistant in a clinic or shelter setting with surgery experience. Ability to become certified as a CVT or LVT.
  • Skills: Ability to perform physically strenuous activities which will require lifting of moderate to heavy weights (up to 40 lbs.),standing and/or bending, pushing brooms and/or mops, and walking and/or controlling dogs and/or cats, use of cleaning solutions and sitting at a desk for long periods of time. Prior experience with animal restraint. Knowledge of animal handling and experience preferred.
  • Technology: Proficiency in computers and on-line medical records
