Examination Editor I 
Reports to: Manager, Assessment Development

Position Description

The Examination Editor I is responsible for supporting the American Board of Anesthesiology’s examination and content development including, but not limited to, working with question writers and reviewers in new item development using valid item development methodologies. The Examination Editor I serves as a transcriber for item review meetings; provides general copyediting services; and assists with special projects as needed. The Examination Editor I is also responsible for additional activities that support the Assessment Development team.

This role will have primary editorial responsibility for our MOCA Subspecialty programs.

Education

  • Baccalaureate degree in liberal arts or business-related field. 

Skills

  • Demonstrates ability to write clearly and concisely with impeccable grammar.
  • Demonstrates ability to edit and proofread.
  • Demonstrates intermediate to advanced Microsoft Office Suite skills including ability to type 50+ words per minute, Mail Merge in Word, and calculating values, using formulas, and merging data in Excel. 
  • Communicates clearly, professionally, and respectfully with physician volunteers.
  • Effectively resolves problems related to question assignments and item banking software.
  • Successfully adapts to the working style and needs of examination committees and workgroups.
  • Executes defined responsibilities with minimal guidance.
  • Prioritizes and manages multiple tasks while using resources effectively and efficiently.
  • Develops and maintains project schedules.
  • Regularly produces accurate, thorough, professional work.
  • Maintains high standards despite pressing deadlines.

Experience

  • One year or less of test development, editorial work, or related experience, with demonstrated ability to meet stated objectives.
  • Product or program management experience is desirable. 
  • Knowledge of medical terminology is highly desirable.

Specific Responsibilities 

1. Item Development and Item Bank Support

  • Supports MOCA subspecialty item development projects.
  • Develops and distributes item writing and review assignments, providing oversight and follow-up to ensure deadlines are met.
  • Serves as liaison to and maintains productive working relationships with physician volunteers, committee leaders, and mentors by providing excellent customer service.
  • Coordinates additional committee review sessions as needed to support target approval rates.
  • Edits questions for grammar, punctuation, consistency, and accuracy in accordance with ABA style. Keeps all information about exam items and related material confidential and secure from unauthorized access.
  • Reviews item development processes, procedures, and products for quality and recommends improvements as needed.

2. Item Publication and Monitoring

  • Formats and uploads new MOCA subspecialty items to database quarterly.
  • Performs quality analysis checks on all items prior to distribution.
  • Provides item IDs to ABA psychometric staff and uploads statistics to Exam Developer.
  • Answers queries related to test items and monitors diplomate feedback, working with the MOCA Subspecialty Committees to review and resolve issues.

3. Committee Support

  • Facilitates MOCA Subspeciality committee meetings.
  • Records and incorporates changes to test items during onsite and online MOCA subspecialty committee review. Conducts quality analysis following meetings to confirm revisions have been successfully recorded in the item bank.
  • Coordinates and participates in monthly calls with the chairs of the MOCA Subspecialty Committees.
  • Advises committee leadership on SME performance for reappointment and promotion decisions.

4. Electronic and Reference Libraries 

  • Liaise with sales representatives at textbook publishers to finalize licensing contracts and pricing.
  • Maintains licensing contracts for textbooks stored in the electronic and conference room libraries. Transmits licensing contracts to CFO and archives fully executed contracts on Intranet site for records. 
  • Prepares reference texts for user access via online item bank. Ensures accuracy of hyperlinks and reference information once available in electronic library. Updates library as new editions publish. 
  • Research pricing to order physical textbooks for conference room libraries. Maintains inventory and record of their locations. 

5. Other

  • Support the MOCA Primary editor with the end-of-year content outline spreadsheet to ACCME, noting significant changes to the MOCA Subspecialty content outlines.
  • Provides transcription services for committee meetings, item writing workshops, and other ABA activities, serving as a primary transcription resource as needed.
  • Provides occasional copyediting for other assessments.
  • Supports special projects within MOCA Subspecialty item development, including, but not limited to, the High Priority Topics Report and society collaboration efforts.


Special Requirements 

  • Must be able to participate in committee meetings that occasionally occur on weekends or extend outside of normal business hours.
  • Must be available to provide occasional email coverage after office hours to respond to question authors, editors, and committee chairs regarding item development.
  • Must be able to work onsite in Raleigh, NC, at least two days/week.
