GENERAL DESCRIPTION

The Housing Inspector is Responsible for conducting inspections of assistant housing units within Housing Choice Voucher Program. This includes initial annual special inspections to ensure compliance with federal, state and local building codes, as well as HUD Housing Quality Standards (HQS) and NSPIRE requirements. The Inspector documents findings, communicates results to owners and participants, and follows up inspections as needed.

Job Duties include:

  • Perform initial annual and special inspections of assisted unit in accordance with HUD HQS/NSPIRE requirements and applicable building codes.
  • Identify potential lead hazards and ensure appropriate follow up and compliance.
  • Conduct re-inspections of previously field units and investigate inspection-related complaints.
  • Utilize the Yardi system to schedule inspections, enter results, and maintain accurate outcomes.
  • Notify owner/landlords and program participants of scheduled inspections and inspection outcomes.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

  • A valid North Carolina Driver’s License, drug testing, criminal background check and DMV check is required. 
  • Visual Assessment Certification for Lead Based Paint

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Prior experience conducting housing inspections or work in housing programs.
  • Certifications related to building inspection, lead assessment or HQS.

DESIRABLE EDUCATION AND TRAINING

Graduation from high school with vocational training in carpentry, plumbing, electrical or related building trades. One to two years of experience in building, trade or inspection field is preferred, or any equivalent combination of training and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities.
