Parks Construction and Infrastructure Worker

Pay Range: $20.00/hour to $24.10/hour, depending on experience

The City of Olathe is currently seeking a Parks Construction and Infrastructure Worker to join our Parks Construction team. Our Parks Construction Team has the unique privilege of building parks for the residents of Olathe to enjoy.

In this role you will perform a variety of tasks from concrete to framing to roofing and everything in between. A typical day might include pouring concrete, repairing a structure in a park, and gathering materials for the next project.

We’re looking for someone who loves to be outside, has high-energy and patience, is a self-starter, takes pride in what they attach their name to, and wants to do quality work.

If you have experience in carpentry, concrete, framing, or roofing; have a desire to learn and can pick up new things quickly; and like variety and thrive in an environment where every day is different, this may be the job for you!

Our Parks Construction Crew enjoys:

The Parks Construction and Infrastructure Worker utilizes specialized and practical skills to assist with park maintenance, construction projects, and repairs.  The role is responsible for maintaining park equipment to ensure operational functionality and safety and also engages in a variety of construction and/or maintenance tasks pertaining to designated areas of responsibility, facilitating the overall upkeep and enhancement of park infrastructure. The role is also responsible for supporting special events and emergency operations, such as snow removal, which may require on-call duties and overtime. The Parks Construction and Infrastructure Worker is the first level in a four level career progression of Parks Construction and Infrastructure Worker, Parks Maintenance and Construction Technician, Parks Craftsperson I, and II.

Key Responsibilities

  • Completes manual labor and tasks such as digging and shoveling; completes basic maintenance and construction work related to park equipment and structures; assists with the construction, inspection, and repair of park facilities, equipment, buildings and outdoor pools which may involve the work areas of basic carpentry, painting, and concrete/masonry.

  • Operates and maintains a variety of mechanical tools and equipment; assists with daily maintenance and minor repairs on equipment; maintains a safe job site and work environment following safety standards; drives a variety of vehicles including trucks, tractors, dump trucks with trailers, and forklifts; may occasionally operate heavy machinery including mini excavator, skid steer loader, or backhoe.

  • Completes documentation of work tasks completed which may require utilization of computerized work orders to document repairs and preventative maintenance.

Qualifications
 

Experience: Basic experience and knowledge of general maintenance work is required. One year of construction and/or maintenance experience is preferred.

Education: A high school diploma or equivalent is required.  Additional relevant experience may be substituted for education.


Licenses and Certifications: A valid driver's license with a favorable driving record is required. Must obtain a Class B commercial driver's license with air brake endorsement along with DOT medical certificate within six months of employment. A Class A commercial driver's license is also acceptable. May require specialty certification in assigned area.

Environmental or Physical Demands: Will work outside in a variety of weather and environmental conditions.  Will be exposed to wind, sun, rain, pollen, allergens, and other elements.  This work requires one to walk, stand, bend, squat, climb, kneel, crawl, twist, and reach frequently throughout the day. Will lift and carry weight up to 80 pounds independently and up to 160 pounds with someone else. Will operate a variety of hand and power tools used in maintenance and construction activities.  Will drive or ride from site-to-site multiple times throughout the day.
