We are currently searching for an experienced Senior Project Manager to support our Carolinas Region located in Raleigh, NC. 


To be considered for this position, applicants must have, at minimum, a BS degree in Civil Engineering from an accredited four-year college or university or equivalent experience.


What you’ll be doing:

  • Holds the Consultant’s leadership role for the project
  • Directly supports Owner’s project leadership to enable successful on-time and on-schedule delivery of the projects/tasks
  • Responsible for management and oversight of the Project/Tasks, including coordinating with stakeholders and meeting all Federal requirements
  • Represents the team on technical discussions and has the technical knowhow to discuss and resolve technical issues
  • Sees the project’s “big picture” beyond engineering and construction requirements, and understands their interface with the project’s objectives
  • Ability to act decisively and timely to ensure DOT’s schedule responsibilities are met
  • Ability to balance technical constraints, policy goals, and stakeholder needs to recommend optimal solutions to difficult issues
  • Coordinates with multiple agencies and local jurisdictions to provide timely information sharing, win-win solutions, and ultimately obtain project support
  • Coordinates with community and business stakeholders to provide timely information, receive productive input, and responsive issue resolution
  • Work within a safety-first culture where protecting our people, clients, and communities is a core value. Through Volkert’s safety program, you will learn proactive safety practices, risk awareness, and how safety communications are built into daily engineering activities and project delivery.
  • Work within a supportive team environment where quality matters and attention to detail is valued. You will be guided in developing good self-checking habits and learning how to review the work of others, while gaining hands-on experience with Quality Management principles that support high-quality engineering projects.


What you need to have:

  • BS degree in Civil Engineering from an accredited four-year college or university, or equivalent experience
  • Professional Engineer license in NC preferred, not required
  • 20 + years of experience in transportation infrastructure development and construction
  • Demonstrated knowledge of public policy and business practices related to transportation issues
  • Demonstrated familiarity with DOT and FHWA policies and procedures
  • Demonstrated skill in maneuvering through complex political situations with sensitivity to how people and organizations function, as well as, negotiating and leading discussions to reach positive outcomes
  • Demonstrated knowledge, skills, and experience to manage, coordinate, and oversee multiple projects/tasks in order to meet on-time, on-budget, high quality business objectives
  • Ability to pass a pre-employment drug screening to ensure a safe and productive work environment. Volkert adheres to federal guidelines, which may include testing for substances such as marijuana. Please note that federal regulations may differ from state-specific guidelines
  • Valid driver’s license and a satisfactory motor vehicle report (MVR)
