NCDOT Internship Opportunity – Roadway Design Unit

Position Overview:

The Roadway Design Unit at NCDOT is seeking a motivated intern to join our team within the Design Development and Support Section. This internship offers students interested in civil engineering, transportation design, or related fields the opportunity to gain hands-on experience in roadway design through structured training and real-world project exposure.

The Roadway Design Unit plays a critical role in developing roadway plans and designs that support North Carolina’s transportation infrastructure. As an intern, you will work closely with a Team Lead and collaborate with engineers across the unit while completing ORD CADD training modules and a training-style example project. Interns who successfully complete their training may have the opportunity to assist with active roadway design tasks alongside their team.

This onsite position provides near-daily interaction with supervisors and daily collaboration with team members, offering a supportive learning environment focused on professional growth, technical skill development, and exposure to transportation project workflows. At the conclusion of the internship, interns will present their training project and overall internship experience to unit leadership.

Key Responsibilities:

•Complete ORD CADD training modules as part of a structured training-style project.
•Work with a Team Lead to develop roadway design skills and complete an example roadway project.
•Apply engineering principles, mathematics, and computer-aided design (CADD) tools in a practical setting.
•Collaborate with supervisors and team members on a daily basis to support learning and project development.
•Assist with roadway design-related work on active projects upon successful completion of training modules, as scheduling allows.
•Strengthen oral and written communication skills through regular check-ins and a final presentation to unit leadership summarizing the training project and internship experience.

Preferred Qualifications:

•Students majoring in or with coursework in Civil Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Transportation Design, Construction, or Computer Science or closely related field are encouraged to apply.
•Interest in transportation design and infrastructure development.
•Strong analytical, technical, and problem-solving skills.
•Familiarity or interest in computer-aided design (CADD) tools.
•Effective oral and written communication skills.
•Ability to work collaboratively in a team-oriented, onsite environment.

Additional Information:

•This position offers a chance to work in a professional engineering environment and develop technical skills critical to a career in transportation design.
