Job Description:

L3Harris Aerojet Rocketdyne is a world-recognized aerospace and defense leader providing propulsion and energetics to its space, missile defense, strategic, tactical missile and armaments customers throughout domestic and international markets. The company offers a complete line of propulsion products for launch vehicles, missile defense, tactical and advanced hypersonic propulsion.

 

This is a Sr Specialist-level design engineering position with a focus on component and system design of solid propulsion systems used on solid rocket motors and/or controllable solid systems. Work is performed with minimal direction. The position exercises latitude in determining objectives and approaches on assignments. The candidate will lead component and system design that could include Hot Gas Thrusters, Insulation Systems, Manifolds, Ignition Systems, Pressure Vessels, and Test Hardware used in Controllable Solid Propulsion Systems, or other advanced Propulsion Systems.

 

Essential Functions:

 

  • Complete working knowledge of application of concepts, practices, and techniques. 
  • May be responsible for mechanical design activities for composite case and solid propulsion systems and components.
  • Develop design concepts, 3D models and support the development of detailed drawings for the manufacture of parts.
  • Conduct trade studies and develop component specifications and procedures as required. Interact with component analysis, manufacturing, project engineering, quality and customer support groups.
  • Plan and execute complex design tasks with general oversight and work effectively within an Integrated Product Team (IPT) environment.  Review of work products. 
  • Participate in shop floor and production hardware processing at suppliers and internally. Provide input to address nonconforming hardware, process planning, support production meetings, and work with supply chain to assure that design requirements are met.
  • Support engineering drawing and specification updates at configuration change boards.
  • Develop or assist with developing test plans and technical reviews.
  • Assist in the identification and support of risk reduction and environmental test requirements. This may include manufacturing pathfinders, subscale testing, component and system level qualification tests.
  • Prepare material and support presentations for internal and external customers. Responsible for preparing engineering reports to support tolerance studies, engineering analyses or failure investigations, including technical close-out reports.
  • Travel: 25%.
  • Ability to obtain a US Secret Security Clearance.

 

Qualifications:

 

  • Bachelor’s Degree and minimum 6 years of prior Mechanical Design experience; Graduate Degree and a minimum of 4 years of prior Mechanical Design experience; or in lieu of a degree, minimum of 10 years of prior Mechanical Design experience.  

 

Preferred Additional Skills:

  • Experience with CAD software tools (CREO), and PLM Systems (Windchill).
  • Familiar with ASME Y14.5.
  • Experience with Solid Rocket Motors is preferred.
  • Knowledge of solid propulsion systems design and manufacturing methods.

 

In compliance with pay transparency requirements, the salary range for this role in California, 
is $USA2 $102,000K -$189,000KUSA2 MAX. This is not a guarantee of compensation or salary, as final offer amount may vary based on factors including but not limited to experience and geographic location.
