Job Objective:

Undertakes forensic medical exams of suspected sexual and physical abuse of children and adolescents age newborn to 17 as ordered by Riverside County law enforcement and/or Child Protective Services. When necessary, orders laboratory work and imaging to be conducted to better assess potential abuse. Conducts follow-up medical exams as necessary. Conducts medical exams of children entering the foster care system.

Required: Master of Science in Physician Assistant (MSPA) or Doctor of Physician Assistant (PA) program completion of an accredited program

Licensure/Certification:
Required:

Active and unrestricted CA licensure as a Physician Assistant (PA)

Current board certification or board eligible as an PA by a nationally accredited organization

Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) certificate to dispense controlled substances (II-V)

National Provider Identifier (NPI)

CURES registration

Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification from the American Heart Association (AHA)


Experience:

Required: Two (2) years of experience in child abuse pediatrics, including conducting forensic medical exams for sexual and physical abuse, and the care of children in foster care

Reports To: BSCC Medical Director and/or Eisenhower Emergency Department Medical Director

Essential Responsibilities

1. Demonstrates compliance with Code of Conduct and compliance policies and takes action to resolve compliance questions or concerns and report suspected violations.
2. Secures appropriate consents for treatment, medication administration, photography and/or forensic exam.
3. Performs timely, thorough and professional forensic examinations, evidence collection, and documentation as per protocol, including providing timely, thorough, and professional forensic evidence collection, documentation/photo documentation, and preservation of evidence.
4. Evaluates pregnancy risk and offer prevention as appropriate (which may be in conjunction with the Emergency Department physician); obtains informed consent as needed.
5. Evaluates and treats prophylactically for sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) as per protocol and as indicated, which may be in conjunction with Emergency Department physician. 
6. Assesses, documents, and seeks care for injuries noted on forensic exam and reports any findings that may require immediate medical intervention to Emergency Department staff/physicians and BSCC Medical Director and refers patient to Emergency Room physician for further evaluation and care as warranted.
7. Performs medical exams of children entering the foster care system.
8. Provides crisis intervention and ongoing support and education to victims and support persons throughout treatment; appropriately refer victims for immediate and follow-up medical care and/or counseling.
9. Provides discharge instructions, follow-up medical care options and referrals, which may include Victims of Violent Crime Compensation.
10. Schedules and performs medical follow-up as per protocol and as needed.
11. Participates in peer review, process improvement and quality review.
12. Maintains annual competencies to conduct forensic evidentiary examinations.
13. Provides expert testimony in court when indicated/subpoenaed.
14. Attends monthly Multi-Disciplinary Team meetings with law enforcement, prosecutors and Child Protective Services.
15. Performs other duties as assigned.
