Job Objective:

Performs, verifies and reports laboratory tests; supervises and verifies work of non-licensed personnel; provides appropriate education for staff and students. Performs Lab Assistant and Lab Technical Aide responsibilities as required.

Education:
Required: Bachelor’s degree

Licensure/Certification:

Required: California Clinical Laboratory Scientist (CLS) license

Preferred: American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP) Medical Laboratory Scientist (MLS) Certification or equivalent


Experience:
Preferred: CLS experience

Reports To: Supervisor, Manager or Director Supervises: N/A Ages of Patients: Neonate/ Infant, Pediatric, Adolescent, Adult, Geriatric Blood Borne Pathogens: High Potential

Skills, Knowledge, Abilities:

Ability to effectively communicate in a positive and professional manner, Ability to learn complex tasks, Ability to operate general office equipment (i.e., computer, printer, scanner, telephone, etc.), Complex math skills, Fine motor skills, Self-starter; driven to take action without needing prompting, Understanding of relevant technologies and tools pertinent to the job role, Written and verbal communication skills

Essential Responsibilities

1. Demonstrates compliance with Code of Conduct and compliance policies and takes action to resolve compliance questions or concerns and report suspected violations.
2. Orders and processes laboratory requests in accordance with established procedures.
3. Collects and processes all necessary paperwork, assuring appropriate reporting.
4. Assists in ordering, maintaining, and restocking of supplies; disinfects and maintains organized work environment.
5. Utilizes Laboratory Information Systems as appropriate.
6. Performs proficiency testing as assigned.
7. Complies with hospital and Laboratory safety policies and procedures.
8. Supervises and verifies non-licensed personnel’s work.
9. Performs and verifies quality control and patient test results.
10. Performs calibration of instruments, and validation of instruments and/or procedures; performs instrument maintenance and troubleshooting.
11. Monitors daily safety checks and temp logs.
12. Maintains awareness of workflow utilizing Order and Result monitors to achieve optimal departmental test turnaround times.
13. Determines acceptability and appropriateness of specimens for testing and monitors results for accuracy and validity.
14. Properly endorses unfinished tasks to the next shift.
15. Participates and assists in student, resident and fellow lectures and training.
16. Assists in new CLS and Laboratory Technical Aide training.
17. Performs microbiology and immunology tests, as needed.
18. Performs transfusion services functions, as applicable, including: ABO and Rh typing, antibody screening, and crossmatching entering results accurately into computer; routine antibody identification, and antigen screening; emergency blood release; antibody elutions and adsorptions; irradiates blood; modifies component in computer and verifies label before issue; works-up suspected transfusion reactions and enters appropriate orders and results into computer.
19. Answers telephone; responds to questions or directs calls to appropriate individual.
20. Performs other duties as assigned.
