Position Summary

Ergon is seeking a Project Engineer to join our Energy and Specialty Solutions (ESS) Business Unit. The role leads and supports Capital Projects at Refineries and/or Chemical Plants. Project sizes typically range from $2 million to $50 million and include facility improvements, expansions, and strategic infrastructure investments.

The Project Engineer partners with facility leadership, operations teams, engineering consultants, and contractors to develop project scopes, budgets, schedules, and execution plans while ensuring projects are completed safely, on time, within budget, and to Ergon's quality standards. This role provides an opportunity to make a meaningful impact by delivering projects that strengthen our operations and support our long-term growth.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead capital projects through all phases including planning, engineering, procurement, construction, commissioning, and project closeout.
  • Develop project scopes, budgets, schedules, and execution strategies for major capital investments.
  • Prepare Authorization for Expenditures (AFEs) and supporting documentation for management approval.
  • Coordinate with facility management, operations personnel, engineering consultants, and contractors throughout project execution.
  • Manage contractor selection and oversee construction activities to ensure quality, safety, and schedule performance.
  • Review engineering drawings, specifications, calculations, and technical documentation.
  • Evaluate project risks and develop mitigation strategies to support successful project delivery.
  • Monitor project cost, schedule, and performance while communicating progress to key stakeholders.
  • Participate in Process Safety Startup Reviews (PSSR), commissioning, startup activities, and troubleshooting.
  • Support long-range facility planning, asset acquisition due diligence, and greenfield development initiatives.
  • Ensure compliance with environmental, health, and safety regulations throughout all project activities.
  • Develop and track project performance metrics and implement project management best practices across the organization.
  • Build strong working relationships with internal customers, consultants, contractors, and cross-functional teams while supporting Ergon's commitment to exceptional customer service.

Basic Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering is required.
  • Mechanical or Civil Engineering degree preferred.
  • Strong analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage multiple priorities and complex projects.
  • Ability to work independently while collaborating effectively across multiple business functions.
  • Commitment to safety, quality, and continuous improvement.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience managing capital projects in refining, petroleum, chemical processing, terminaling, or other industrial manufacturing environments.
  • Experience with engineering design, project cost estimating, contractor management, and construction oversight.
  • Knowledge of process safety management, commissioning, and startup activities.
  • Experience working with engineering consultants and EPC contractors.
  • Familiarity with project management methodologies and capital project execution best practices.
  • Proven ability to build collaborative relationships with internal and external stakeholders while delivering outstanding customer service.
