PURPOSE

 

This individual is responsible for originating truss design and placement drawings prepared directly from information submitted on a company order form, simple architectural plans, repeated from previous jobs, or from information developed by a Truss Technician II.

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

 

  • Prepares truss design and layout drawings using proprietary software developed by a code accepted metal plate manufacturing company.  These drawings may be reviewed by a Truss Technician II prior to releasing to the field or production. 
  • Revises layout and design drawings for projects that are similar to previous work in addition to structural wood products and accessory items supplied by the company.
  • Assures stability, deflection and load carries in a manner that will meet or surpass codes associated with each project.
  • Confers with technical and other engineering personnel, and prepares design modifications as required.
  • Writes technical descriptions specifying material qualities and properties.
  • Draws rough sketches or arranges for finished drawings or photographs to illustrate specified materials or assembly sequence.
  • Other duties as assigned.

This job has no supervisory responsibilities.

 

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.

 

Associate’s degree (A.A.) from two-year college or technical school; or six months to one years’ related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.

 

COMPETENCIES

 

Language Skills:  The individual shall have the ability to communicate knowledgeably and effectively with customers, suppliers, and other industry professionals.

 

Mathematical Skills: Demonstrates understanding and ability to perform truss math (i.e. trigonometry, dimension calculations, forces).

 

Reasoning Ability: Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions. Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal with several abstract and concrete variables.

 

Computer Skills: Primecad, MS Word, MS Excel and AutoCAD preferred.  All duties are performed using software and procedures detailed by the company. 

 

Certificates, Licenses, and Registrations: This individual is expected to pass the Wood Truss Council Level 1 certification or equivalent to be classified as a Truss Technician – Level 1.  Mitek Certificate of Completion and Manufacturing Certificate in Truss Design preferred.

 

Other Qualifications:  This individual will demonstrate the following:

 

Excellent organizational skills, attention to detail and ability to handle multiple priorities.

Understanding of basic construction and truss terminology

Knowledge of plan reading and material take-off

Ability to handle job site issues – bracing and field repairs

Knowledge of truss applications – performance and details

Knowledge of truss design including basic structural analysis

Knowledge of load development – code requirements, load diagrams, reactions

Knowledge of wood technology – grades, properties, species, and factors affecting strength

Understanding of design, manufacturing, and installation overview

Knowledge of beam design

Knowledge of connectors – hangers and fasteners
