Position Summary: 

The Port Operator A is a senior-level position responsible for advanced operation of heavy equipment and coordination of cargo handling activities in a port and terminal environment. This role serves as a lead operator, supporting vessel loading and unloading operations while ensuring safety, efficiency, and productivity. The Port Operator A provides guidance to less-experienced operators, assists with operational planning, and collaborates closely with Foremen to execute complex and high-priority work.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Operate heavy equipment, including cranes, hold loaders, excavators, loaders, forklifts, and other material handling machinery with a high level of proficiency.
  • Execute cargo handling operations in alignment with operational plans and provide feedback to Foremen to improve workflow and efficiency.
  • Support vessel loading and unloading activities, including material staging and coordination with marine crews.
  • Serve as a lead operator on complex or high-priority assignments to ensure safe and efficient execution.
  • Ensure strict adherence to all safety protocols to prevent accidents, injuries, and equipment damage.
  • Assist in training and mentoring less-experienced operators (Operator B and C), including proper communication methods such as hand signals and operational procedures.
  • Transport materials between docks, storage areas, and vessels safely and efficiently.
  • Perform routine equipment inspections and identify maintenance or repair needs.
  • Conduct basic troubleshooting and support timely resolution of operational challenges.
  • Maintain clean and organized work areas, including docks, yards, and equipment.
  • Perform manual labor and support operational activities as needed.
  • Immediately report any damage to vessels, vehicles, equipment, or property.
  • Operate equipment responsibly to maintain reliability and operational readiness.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned to support safe and efficient terminal operations.

Required Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or GED equivalent preferred.
  • Minimum of 5+ years of experience operating heavy equipment in port, construction, or industrial environments.
  • Advanced proficiency in operating multiple types of heavy equipment.
  • Valid driver’s license with a clean driving record.
  • Strong understanding of cargo handling operations, safety practices, and equipment maintenance.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead tasks and support team coordination in a fast-paced environment.
  • Strong communication and problem-solving skills.

Preferred Experience:

  • Extensive experience working in port, terminal, or marine environments.
  • OSHA 30 certification.
  • Transportation Worker Identification Credential (TWIC).
  • Experience with bulk, breakbulk, or specialized cargo operations.
  • Experience mentoring or training operators and contributing to team development.

Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds.
  • Ability to stand, walk, climb, and operate equipment for extended periods.
  • Ability to work in outdoor conditions, including exposure to heat, cold, rain, and snow.
  • Required use of PPE (hard hat, safety vest, steel‑toe boots) in operational areas.

Work Environment:

  • Outdoor port and terminal environment with exposure to weather, noise, dust, and heavy machinery.
  • Fast-paced, safety-sensitive setting requiring coordination with marine crews, yard personnel, and equipment operators.
  • Flexible schedule required, including shift work, extended hours, and weekends based on vessel and operational needs.
