SUMMARY OF DUTIES: The Graduate Assistant (GA)–ASC Communications position supports the Academic Support Services area of the Academic Success Center. The GA plays an essential role in the operations of subject tutoring, writing support services, academic coaching, and success workshop programs. The GA promotes these services through coordination, training, marketing, and program monitoring. The position(s) enables the ASC to sustain tutoring operations and writing support for over 60 hours per week including evenings and weekends through the fall, winter, spring, and summer semesters. The responsibilities listed below are shared between two Graduate Assistants in order to provide continuous and consistent support.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

1. Help organize and oversee the Academic Success Center by coordinating the weekly schedules of 30-35 tutors and delegating tutor productivity tasks.

2. Tutor students in person and online in:

     a. Upper-level and graduate-level courses that they are qualified to support.

     b. Advanced writing skills and citation styles in MLA9 and APA7.

3. Keep the WCOnline scheduling system up-to-date and accurate (training provided).

4. Provide academic coaching to students with academic alerts (training provided).

5. Create supplemental learning materials, including but not limited to:

     a. Guides on topics needed for student success

     b. Handouts for tutors to use when assisting students

6. Support ASC initiatives and summer programs/events for incoming, adult, and graduate students.

7. Serve as a role model and mentor to Peer Tutors and clients by demonstrating business etiquette, stellar customer service, and genuine concern for the success of the ASC’s clients.

8. Demonstrate a high degree of professional reliability, good judgment, and appropriate utilization of resources, including work-study time.

9. Maintain exemplary academic status in the graduate program in which he/she is enrolled.

10. Other duties as assigned by the supervisor or Director of Academic Support.

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES (specific to Communications/Coaching):

1. Produce promotional and informational materials that increase utilization of ASC services.

     a. Update bulletin boards and display boards for events.

     b. Maintain ASC’s social media.

     c. Make classroom visits and presentation materials.

2. Update Canva flyers, ASC Sway page, weekly AU Campus E-news, brochures, Powerpoint slides, etc.

3. Curate and produce the monthly StallTalk issues. 

4. Assist with new tutor recruitment, interviews, and new tutor onboarding. 

5. Communicate with faculty members to connect clients with tutors during winter & summer sessions.

6. Oversee ASC tutoring until 8:00pm on some evenings and/or Sundays.

7. Deliver academic success workshops or conduct academic coaching sessions.

8. Participate in campus wide activities such as enrollment, orientation, open houses, and commencement events.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

1. Bachelor's Degree with a CUM GPA of 3.0 or better

2. Excellent oral, written, and interpersonal communication skills 

3. Proficiency in Microsoft Office software

4. Must be accepted or currently be a graduate student in one of Alvernia’s graduate programs
