Position Title: Technician II – Quality Chemical Lab

Job Summary: Performs a diversified range of moderately complex tasks related to preparing and analyzing steel, alloy, and slag specimens using instrumental chemical analysis methods. Works with moderate supervision and follows established standards to ensure accurate testing, proper equipment maintenance, and compliance with laboratory procedures. Supports production by preparing samples, performing analyses, maintaining laboratory instruments, and ensuring sample quality and accuracy of results.

Primary Responsibilities:  

  • Prepare steel, alloy, and slag specimens using abrasive saws, grinders, sanders, and drill presses.
  • Inspect specimens for quality; reject and request replacements when necessary.
  • Register specimens in the Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS) and ensure proper identification, retention, or disposal.
  • Perform chemical analyses using C/S combustion instruments, N/O fusion instruments, and optical emission spectrometers.
  • Apply type corrections and review data using certified reference materials and statistical methods.
  • Perform routine preventative maintenance and corrective maintenance on sample preparation equipment and analytical instruments.
  • Maintain auxiliary systems, including dust collection and sludge removal systems.
  • Support special projects and perform additional assigned duties.

Position Requirements: Education and/or Training:

  • High school diploma required.
  • Associate degree in Chemistry or two years in a physical science curriculum preferred.
  • Additional demonstrated relevant experience preferred.

Technical Expertise:

  • Working knowledge of chemical testing procedures and laboratory equipment.
  • Ability to operate C/S and N/O instruments and optical emission spectrometers.
  • Knowledge of statistical analysis methods and applying corrections to test data.
  • Familiarity with LIMS and instrument software.

Other Skills & Abilities:

  • Ability to operate and maintain chemical laboratory equipment.
  • Ability to organize tasks and follow correct sample processing priorities.
  • Ability to work in a production‑oriented environment.
  • Ability to work with or without direct supervision.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Mechanical aptitude for maintenance and minor repairs on equipment.
  • Ability to lift and carry items up to 40 lbs.
