ODA powers millions of clusters across all AWS regions, enabling customers to run massive-scale analytics using open-source frameworks like Apache Spark, Trino, Apache Iceberg, Hudi, and Delta. Our teams build the automated release pipelines that package and distribute production-ready releases across multiple deployment modes (EC2, EKS, Serverless), and develop the core query engine optimizations that deliver 5x+ performance improvements over open-source baselines.
We are looking for a Technical Program Manager to coordinate complex, cross-cutting programs across our Release Automation (Fundamentals) and Engines teams. You will drive end-to-end delivery of programs that span release pipeline modernization, engine performance initiatives, open-source upstream integrations, and region expansion. You will manage dependencies across teams, identify and mitigate risks, and ensure that our engineering investments translate into measurable customer outcomes.
Key job responsibilities
Own and drive cross-team program execution for release automation, engine performance, and datalake integration initiatives spanning Amazon EMR, AWS Glue, and Amazon Athena.
Build and maintain integrated program schedules across the Fundamentals and Engines teams, tracking milestones, dependencies, and critical path items across release pipeline modernization, region expansion, and engine optimization workstreams.
Identify, assess, and mitigate risks that span team boundaries — escalating early when release pipeline issues threaten downstream engine delivery or when upstream open-source changes impact release timelines.
Define program metrics and mechanisms (WBRs, dashboards, program reviews) to measure release velocity, pipeline reliability, engine performance benchmarks, and operational toil reduction.
Drive region build programs end-to-end, coordinating infrastructure readiness, release validation, and service launch activities across multiple AWS regions and deployment modes (EC2, EKS, Serverless).
Coordinate open-source integration programs, ensuring that upstream contributions to Apache Spark, Trino, and Apache Iceberg are tracked, reviewed, and merged in alignment with internal release cadences.
Partner with engineering leaders to facilitate technical trade-off discussions, helping teams balance new capability development against reliability, security patching, and operational debt reduction.
Author and deliver written narratives (OP documents, business reviews, program status updates) to communicate progress, risks, and resource needs to senior leadership.
Drive continuous improvement in release processes by identifying bottlenecks, proposing automation opportunities, and establishing mechanisms that prevent recurring issues.
A day in the life
The Open Data Analytics (ODA) organization builds and operates the services that millions of AWS customers rely on for large-scale data processing — Amazon EMR, AWS Glue, and Amazon Athena. Our teams enable customers to run analytics using open-source frameworks like Apache Spark, Trino, Hive, and datalake table formats like Apache Iceberg, Hudi, and Delta, across multiple deployment modes and every AWS region.
This TPM role sits at the intersection of two critical teams within ODA:
ODA Fundamentals owns the end-to-end release lifecycle — the automated pipelines (Kamino) that take open-source frameworks and package them into production-ready AMIs and container images, the patching and region build programs, and the release automation tooling that ensures every release reaches customers reliably.
ODA Engines owns the core query engine and datalake integrations — making deep modifications to Spark, Trino, and Iceberg to deliver superior performance, scalability, and enterprise features in serverless environments. This team actively contributes to open-source communities and stays current with the latest framework versions.
Our culture values operational excellence, technical depth, and builder empowerment. We believe that great program management makes engineering teams faster — not by adding process, but by removing ambiguity, surfacing risks early, and creating mechanisms that let engineers focus on building. We are a team that ships frequently, operates what we build, and takes pride in the infrastructure that powers analytics at AWS scale.
