Position Overview
The Senior Clinical Laboratory Associate is responsible for assisting the clinical laboratory scientists and supporting the daily operations of the clinical laboratory. The Senior Clinical Laboratory Associate must demonstrate the initiative, skills, competency, and knowledge base to assist clinical laboratory scientists in automated high complexity sample processing steps, independent automated and manual sample accessioning and preparation, and all other support functions.
Essential Duties
Include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Perform equipment maintenance according to the laboratory’s standard operating procedures (SOPs).
- Maintain sufficient inventory of material, supplies, and equipment in the laboratory; order materials from outside vendors with management approval.
- Perform sample intake, unpacking, processing, and accessioning of incoming clinical samples.Â
- Initiate outbound communication to internal or external customers to resolve issues related to samples or sample information received in the laboratory.
- Manage ribonucleic acid (RNA) sample inventory.
- Assist with the preparation of reagents, sample processing, and plate assembly.
- Create sample batches, print labels, and label tubes and plates.
- Clean glassware, racks, and other laboratory supplies.
- Respond to temperature alerts and generate reports using the wireless temperature monitoring system; perform a root cause analysis of deviations and implement a resolution, as needed.
- Coordinate the laboratory equipment calibration process.
- Accurately document and maintain all records for equipment and instruments.
- Assist with organizing and maintaining personnel and training documents.
- Abide by the College of American Pathologists (CAP), Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments (CLIA), Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA), Food and Drug Administration (FDA), and other state, federal, international, and regulatory guidelines.
- Perform quality assurance activities; including, but not limited to, internal audits and inspection preparation.
- Identify, escalate, and implement process improvement initiatives upon laboratory management approval.
- Expand job knowledge by participating in continuing education opportunities; including, but not limited to, meetings or webinars.
- Set-up the liquid handling robots and assist with automated procedures using the robots.
- Author, revise, and review SOPs, as needed.
- Lead and/or participate in projects under the supervision of a clinical laboratory scientist (CLS) or supervisor while maintaining quality and efficient workflow of daily duties.
- Serve as a lead to the laboratory assistant team to coordinate tasks, divide workload, manage projects, and review documents, as assigned.Â
- Ability to divide workload evenly among laboratory assistants in accordance with operational needs and work as part of a team.
- Apply ability to learn and follow written procedures.
- Ability to analyze issues and troubleshoot or escalate, as needed.
- Ability to communicate verbally and in writing.

- Ability to lift up to 40 pounds for approximately 5% of a typical working day.
- Ability to work on a mobile device, tablet, or in front of a computer screen and/or performing typing for approximately 50% of a typical working day.
- Ability to grasp with both hands; pinch with thumb and forefinger; turn with hand/arm; reach above shoulder height.
- Ability to comply with any applicable personal protective equipment requirements.
- May perform repetitious actions using lab tools.
- Use of various chemicals may be used to perform duties.
Minimum Qualifications
- Bachelor’s Degree in Life Sciences or related field as outlined in the essential duties; or Associates Degree in Life Sciences or related field as outlined in the essential duties with 2 years of relevant experience in lieu of Bachelor’s Degree; or High School Diploma/General Education Diploma (GED) with 4 years of related experience as outlined in the essential duties in lieu of Bachelor’s Degree.
- 2+ years of experience in a laboratory or production work environment.
- Working knowledge of clinical laboratory regulatory requirements.
- Demonstrated ability to perform the Essential Duties of the position with or without accommodation.
- Authorization to work in the United States without sponsorship.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with liquid handling robots; including, but not limited to, Tecan and Hamilton.
- Experience working in a high-volume laboratory.
- Experience in training lab technicians/lab assistants on current or new duties.
- Experience in managing projects under minimal supervision and complete assignments as expected.
- Experience maintaining inventory or resources in an organized manner.
- Experience with Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS).
- Knowledge of quality control.
Salary Range:
$48,000.00 - $78,000.00Â
The annual base salary shown is for this position located in US - CA - Redwood City on a full-time basis.
