Job Summary

The Automation Service Engineer II will provide primary service response to laboratory operations at Guardant Health’s Redwood City, California facility. The selected candidate will be responsible for performing or facilitating calibration, maintenance and repair of equipment utilized for DNA Extraction, Library Preparation, DNA Quantification and Sequencing. This position requires a candidate that is strong in root cause analysis and repair of equipment commonly used in the DNA sequencing workflow. This candidate must be detail oriented, have worked in a regulated environment (CLIA, CAP and FDA desirable), strong documentation skills (GDP) and strong communication skills both written and verbal.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

  • Provide service, support, and troubleshooting for automated processes and instrumentation at the Guardant Health Redwood City, CA facility.
  • Ensure the highest level of instrument reliability and up-time by performing equipment installations, maintenance, repairs, and qualifications.
  • Monitor instrument metrics and advocate serviceability within cross-functional teams 
  • Evaluate equipment performance trends to propose long-term solutions as needed. 
  • Ability to quickly learn about new technologies and disseminate information by developing SOPs, checklists, and service bulletins. 
  • Contribute to the management of a maintenance and calibration system. 
  • Help end-users troubleshoot issues 
  • Provide service and support during normal business hours, as well as after hours and on weekends as needed. 
  • Effectively communicate with third party service providers. 
  • Responsible for performing or coordinating maintenance of all laboratory equipment.
  • Perform Installation Qualification (IQ), Operational Qualification (OQ), Process Qualification (PQ) on new equipment and as needed.
  • Required to work with Quality to ensure all documentation is accurately completed per regulatory requirements.
  • Maintain organized equipment records.
  • Perform root cause analysis of problems that occur on instruments associated with Guardant’s DNA sequencing products.
  • Triage equipment issues and involve vendors as required.

Required Qualifications

  • A BS degree in an engineering or scientific discipline, with a minimum of 3 + years of related industry experience. 
  • Minimum of 3 years in service engineering or instrumentation and equipment support. 
  • Proficient in providing service support for Hamilton Robotic liquid handlers. 
  • Experience providing service support for Qiagen QiaSymphony, Agilent TapeStation, Illumina Sequencers, and various other laboratory instrumentation. 
  • Experience authoring and executing PM, IQ, OQ, repair, and other service-related documentation. 
  • Familiarity with developing and executing training programs and providing knowledge transfer to other engineers and lab personnel. 
  • Experience working within a CLIA and GMP regulated environment. 
  • Experience standardizing processes for scalability and sustainability. 
  • Ability to effectively communicate and collaborate with internal and external colleagues and customers from diverse scientific, engineering, operational, and regulatory disciplines. 
  • Experience utilizing Lean Manufacturing and Six Sigma methodologies. 
  • Liquid Handler programming experience is a plus. 
  • Field service engineering experience is desirable. 
  • Ability to take part in an on-call rotation with after hours and weekend responses as needed. 
  • Willingness to travel up to 20% as needed. 


Hybrid Work Model:This section is applicable to onsite employees who are eligible for hybrid work location as specified by management and related policies.  Guardant has defined days for in-person/onsite collaboration and work-from-home days for individual-focused time. The annualized base salary ranges for the primary location and any additional locations are listed below. This range does not include benefits or, if applicable, bonus, commission, or equity. Each candidate’s compensation offer will be based on multiple factors including, but not limited to, geography, experience, education, job-related skills, job duties, and business need. Primary Location: Palo Alto, CA Primary Location Base Pay Range: $108,000 - $148,500 Other US Location(s) Base Pay Range: $91,800 - $126,225 If the role is performed in Colorado, the pay range for this job is: $97,200 - $133,650


Employee may be required to lift routine office supplies and use office equipment. Majority of the work is performed in a desk/office environment; however, there may be exposure to high noise levels, fumes, and biohazard material in the laboratory environment. Ability to sit for extended periods of time.
