The Data Engineer, Sr. has in-depth knowledge of relational and cloud-based database management systems and associated application interface technologies. The Data Engineer, Sr. utilizes technical area expertise to assess the operational and/or technical baselines specifically related to the functional components. Additionally, the Data Engineer, Sr. provides insight and advice to senior managers and executives concerning the strategic direction and applicability of enterprise-based products.

Responsibilities

  • Lead and contribute to all aspects of data engineering activities within the software development life cycle, including the development of applicable technical documentation
  • Lead and participate in analyses to determine the feasibility of achieving data engineering requirements given the limitations and constraints of the target solution
  • Lead and participate in trade-off analyses as needed
  • Define and develop techniques to integrate, consolidate, and structure data for analytical and operational use, including the ability to inform on data aggregation and associated security implications
  • Lead contributions to the development of data migration approaches to transition from legacy relational database management systems (RDBMS)
  • Identify data migration strategies to transition data from legacy systems and technologies to advanced, enterprise-based solutions and establish test data sets
  • Lead the effort to design a data synchronization capability between two systems, including a cross-domain solution
  • Participate in the design and implementation of integrations with external systems, including data warehouses.
  • Reconcile data models and de-duplicate data stores where multiple exist
  • Prepare strategic and tactical recommendations with sufficient rationale to advise senior leaders on decisions related to the applicability and application of data technologies
  • Ensure data and database changes are properly implemented and tested, including assessing the impact of requirements and physical changes to the data and database design
  • Identify and resolve data issues throughout the development life cycle
  • Ensure compliance with data and database standards
  • Apply cloud-based data and database technologies, data standards, and best practices while adhering to applicable DoD laws, policies, directives, mandates, and guidance, including data protection of sensitive information (e.g., Personally Identifiable Information (PII))
  • Identify and evaluate data engineering risks and provide mitigation recommendations related to requirements satisfaction
  • Ensure alignment of data engineering activities with the overall program schedule, milestones, and required documentation
  • Maintain current and accurate knowledge of data engineering, data architecture, and data storage best practices
  • Supervisory Responsibilities: Provide guidance and workload to Database Administrator
  • Other duties as assigned

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree OR
  • High school diploma or GED equivalent and an additional 4+ years of experience
  • 8+ years of relevant work experience including data migration efforts and use of associated tools
  • 5+ years of RDBMS concepts with strong SQL skills
  • 5+ years of experience in the data and analytics space
  • 2+ years in key aspects of software engineering such as parallel data processing, data flows, REST APIs, JSON, XML, and microservice architectures.
    • Experience implementing cloud-based data solutions within AWS (e.g., GovCloud, C2S)
    • Hands-on experience with DevOps solutions such as Jenkins, Puppet, Chef, Ansible, CloudFormation, etc.
  • Active TS/SCI w/ CI Poly

 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Baseline and Full Computing Environment Certifications for IAT-II IAW DoD 8570.01-M Preferred
  • Kubernetes and Docker experience a plus
  • Data Modeling experience a plus

 

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Experience with Agile and/or federal software development environments preferred
  • Excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to listen and understand what is being described by the end user, including the ability to explain problem resolutions when necessary
  • Strong communication skills, both written and oral
  • Strong technical and analytical skills with the ability to analyze system functionality with customers and resolve production issues
  • Ability to work independently without direct supervision or guidance
  • Ability to occasionally work after hours and/or do on-call support during weekly patching/updates on Thursday evenings (1500-2300 EST)
  • Ability to work well under pressure with tight deadlines and ambiguity on some projects
  • Demonstrate ability to analytically address complex problems, process critical data, establish facts, and draw quality conclusions
