Position Summary
The Custodian is responsible for maintaining a clean, safe, and orderly environment across designated CARITAS facilities. This role supports daily operations by ensuring all spaces; including common areas, restrooms, offices, and exterior areas, meet cleanliness, safety, and health standards.
The Custodian plays an important role in creating a welcoming and respectful environment for staff, program participants, volunteers, and visitors, program participants to build job skills, while contributing to a culture that promotes accountability, job skill development, and positive work habits.
Primary Responsibilities
- Maintain assigned areas of buildings and grounds in a clean, sanitary, and orderly condition.
- Perform both routine and periodic deep cleaning tasks, including heavy-duty cleaning when required.
- Ensure cleaning supply stations are stocked and organized, and notify supervisor of supply needs.
- Support facility readiness for daily operations, meetings, and program activities.
- Interact respectfully and professionally with program participants, staff, volunteers, and external partners.
Other Responsibilities
- Perform routine custodial duties, including dusting, sweeping, mopping, vacuuming, and sanitizing surfaces.
- Clean, disinfect, and restock restrooms and kitchenettes, ensuring adequate supplies of paper goods, soap, and cleaning materials.
- Collect, bag, and dispose of trash and recyclables in accordance with facility procedures, including use of dumpsters and compactors.
- Operate and maintain custodial equipment (e.g., vacuums, buffers), ensuring proper use and routine care.
- Clean and maintain floors, including scrubbing, finishing, and buffing as needed.
- Clean windows, mirrors, partitions, furniture, fixtures, and other surfaces using appropriate cleaning solutions and methods.
- Follow established safety procedures for the use of chemicals and equipment to prevent injury and damage to facilities.
- Secure facilities as required, including unlocking and locking designated areas.
- Monitor building conditions and report maintenance, repair, or safety concerns to appropriate staff, including submitting work orders as needed.
Qualifications
Must have reliable transportation and have knowledge of all federal, state and local compliance and safety regulations. The ability to work with contractors and outside suppliers and work well with CARITAS' client population are necessary. To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required:
- Ability to understand and follow verbal and written instructions.
- Knowledge of standard cleaning methods, materials, and safety procedures.
- Ability to safely operate custodial equipment and use cleaning chemicals appropriately.
- Strong attention to detail and commitment to maintaining high cleanliness standards.
- Ability to work independently and manage time effectively.
- Ability to perform physically demanding tasks, including standing, walking, bending, and repetitive motions for extended periods.
- Ability to lift and move moderately heavy objects.
- Ability to work effectively in a mission-driven environment serving diverse populations.
- Knowledge of and adherence to federal, state, and local safety and compliance regulations.
- Ability to work collaboratively with contractors, vendors, and internal teams.
- Basic proficiency in G-mail, Google Docs, and Google Forms.

Hours: 40 hours; generally 7am - 3pm M - F, with some weekends
