Description

 

Mission:

Virginia Urology will provide access to individualized, quality, and compassionate urological care from a highly specialized and diverse teams while maintaining a fulfilling work environment.


Overall Objective:

The Perioperative Attendant supports the surgical team by preparing operating rooms, transporting patients and equipment, maintaining cleanliness and supplies, and assisting with the safe flow of patients before, during, and after procedures. 


Principal Activities and Expected End Results: 

  

  • Transport patients safely to and from operating rooms and other clinical areas.
  • Prepare operating rooms and procedure areas before and after surgical procedures.
  • Assist with positioning and transferring patients as directed by clinical staff.
  • Clean, disinfect, and restock operating rooms and equipment according to hospital policies.
  • Check and maintain appropriate supplies, equipment, linens, and surgical materials.
  • Transport specimens, equipment, instruments, and other materials as required.
  • Assist with moving beds, stretchers, surgical equipment, and other items.
  • Follow infection-control, safety, and infection-prevention procedures.
  • Dispose of waste and contaminated materials according to established protocols.
  • Report damaged equipment, supply shortages, safety concerns, or unusual occurrences to the appropriate staff.
  • Maintain patient privacy, dignity, and confidentiality at all times.
  • Communicate professionally with patients, families, visitors, and healthcare team members.
  • Perform other duties related to perioperative operations as assigned. 


Requirements

 

Minimum Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and Experience: 


High school diploma or GED required.

Previous healthcare, hospital, environmental service, patient transport, or operating room experience preferred.

Ability to safely move and transport patients and equipment.

Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced environment.

Strong attention to detail, organizational and teamwork skills.

Basic computer skills with the ability to accurately document in an electronic medical record.

Demonstrate ability to maintain patient confidentiality and comply with HIPAA requirements. 


Desirable Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and Experience: 

     

Knowledge of perioperative procedures, infection prevention, surgical terminology, patient safety, and proper handling of equipment and supplies. 1-2 years of experience in a hospital, ambulatory surgery center, operating room, or other procedural setting preferred.


Prior work experience: 


Previous experience in perioperative services, or an ambulatory surgery center. 


Physical Requirements: 

  

The individual performing this job may reasonably anticipate coming into contact with human blood and other potentially infectious material. Individuals in this position are required to exercise universal precautions, use personal protective equipment and devices when applicable, and learn to abide by the policies related to safety and infection control.


Must be able to lift and carry up to 25 pounds frequently and up to 50 pounds occasionally, with assistance or appropriate equipment. Frequently bend, stoop, kneel, crouch, reach, twist, and climb as necessary to provide patient care. Use hands and fingers for fine motor tasks, including handling of medical equipment and documenting patient information. Posses’ visual acuity, hearing and verbal communication abilities sufficient to observe patient conditions. Frequently push and pull wheelchairs, stretchers, carts, and other patient care equipment.
