Weather Summer Internship at 8News

This internship is for college students who are interested in understanding the field of broadcast meteorology.  The intern will work closely with different members of the StormTracker 8 Weather Team to develop practical skills that will go hand in hand with the theories of meteorology and weather forecasting that they are learning in the classroom. Strict emphasis will be placed on forecasting techniques as it relates to television, digital broadcast and social media.

Duties will include

  • Forecasting the daily weather from the next 24 hours through 8 Days
  • Entering forecasts into the weather software that helps to build the daily forecasts
  • Writing forecasts for the 8News web page and adding in supportive graphics
  • Updating social media
  • Interacting with 8News viewers about the forecast
  • Creating weather shows for broadcast for the on-air meteorologist
  • Researching interesting weather and creating supportive graphics for on-air use
  • Practicing delivering forecasts, during non-air times, to understand the use of the chroma key wall and how to effectively communicate to viewers
  • Recording an on-air audition show for future employment

Requirements and skills

  • Basic understanding of the theories of Meteorology
  • Core understanding of forecasting
  • Willingness to learn and ask questions
  • Work in a very fast paced environment
  • Meet deadlines that can be in seconds or minutes
  • Handle multiple tasks at once
  • You will learn verbal skills to make a forecast simple and easy to understand and follow

Internship details

  • Junior year of college or going into their junior year and must receive college credit for the internship
  • The student is aware that this is a non-paid internship
  • The student will complete any forms necessary from the college or university to receive college credit
  • The intern’s college academic advisor will determine the number of credit hours that the student will receive
  • The StormTracker 8 Meteorologists will oversee the internship and asses the students progress to make sure that they are receiving proper training.
  • The student is responsible for transportation to and from the station
  • The student will work with the StormTracker 8 Meteorologists to determine schedule and hours
  • The student will provide any paperwork to the StormTracker 8 Meteorologists that needs to be signed for course credit and returned to the college or university.
