The Nursing Division Shift Supervisor provides nursing division-level leadership and serves as a resource for operations, regulatory compliance, risk management, and financial stewardship to nursing units during off-shifts (evenings, nights, weekends, holidays) under the guidance and direction of the division Nursing Director.

The Nursing Division Shift Supervisor supports the VCU Health System in efforts that lead to recognition within the healthcare community for excellence in nursing, maintenance of program and fellowship accreditation, and designation as a Magnet Hospital by the American Nurses Credentialing Center.

Essential Job Statements

  • Assists in planning, organizing, coordinating, and monitoring of care processes on nursing units during the designated shift 

  • Works with unit staff to assess challenges and to plan, implement, and evaluate improvement strategies 

  • Assist with ensuring nursing quality and compliance with process of care measures, provides feedback on opportunities for improvement 

  • Assists with interpretation and enforcement of hospital policy and state code as it pertains to delivery of nursing services and provision of care 

  • Works closely with and escalates concerns to unit leadership to ensure appropriate handoff and resolution of concerns and to provide continuity of issue resolution on a 24-hr basis; escalates/informs Clinical Administrator of concerns that have an organizational impact or that require assistance and awareness beyond the scope of this role 

  • Assists with managing patient flow and throughput in collaboration with unit staff, One Call Center, and Support Services staff during designated shift 

  • Responds to patient and visitor concerns and assists unit nursing leaders with investigation and resolution 

  • Assists in providing nursing in-service and education during designated shift 

  • Supervise team members assigned to the nursing division during the designated shift.

Required Education: 

Baccalaureate Degree in Nursing from an accredited School of Nursing 

Preferred Education: 

Master’s Degree in Nursing or related field from an accredited program Certification in specialty area 

Licensure/Certification Required: 

Current RN licensure in Virginia or eligible 

Licensure/Certification Preferred: 

Minimum Qualifications 

Years and Type of Required Experience 

Minimum of three (3) years of clinical experience with at least one (1) year in a lead, charge or supervisory nursing role 

Other Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required: 

Cultural Responsiveness 

Other Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Preferred: 

Experience in an academic medical center environment Experience with similar patient population in either an acute care setting or as applicable to area of practice
