Job Summary:

NOTES: This recruitment is being reopened and will be used to fill up to 20 seasonal positions (no benefits). Spokane County Aquatic Facilities are typically open from mid-June through mid-August, with staff training beginning in late May. All positions require successful clearance of a WA State Patrol inquiry under the Child and Adult Abuse Information Act. Applicants are not required to hold both Lifeguard and Swim Instructor certifications to apply.

Candidates may apply as a Lifeguard only or as a Lifeguard/Water Safety Instructor. Employees who hold a current Water Safety Instructor certification will receive an additional $1.00 per hour for all shifts worked.

HOURLY WAGE: $17.38-$18.78 per hour Depending on Experience
If a certified American Red Cross Water Safety Instructor (WSI), hourly wage increases $1.00 per hour. (details below)

Job Description:

LIFEGUARD JOB SUMMARY:

(Duties may include, but are not limited to the following)

Responsible for ensuring the safety of facility patrons by preventing and responding to emergencies. Lifeguards must recognize and respond quickly and effectively to emergency situations. Enforce all facility rules and regulations. Inspect the facility on a regular basis and report any unsafe conditions or equipment to pool management. Complete records and reports. Participate in regular in-service trainings. Maintain appropriate fitness level. Maintain current lifeguard certification. Complete additional duties as assigned by supervisor.

Examples of Duties

  • Responsible for ensuring the safety of facility patrons by preventing and responding to emergencies.
  • Recognizes and responds quickly and effectively in emergencies.
  • Enforces all aquatic facility policies, rules and regulations.
  • Inspects the facility on a daily schedule and reports any unsafe conditions or equipment to the supervisor.
  • Completes records and reports.
  • Participates in regular in-service training.
  • Maintains fitness level (swimming skills, strength and endurance).
  • Maintains cleanliness and orderliness of all areas of the aquatic facility.
  • Assists with Learn to Swim program.
  • Completes additional duties as assigned by supervisor

Minimum Requirements

  • Must be at least 15 years of age at time of hire
  • Possess a valid government issued ID and Social Security Card
  • Required to submit to background check
  • Obtain an American Red Cross Lifeguard Certification before first shift at the pool

WATER SAFETY INSTRUCTOR (Additional employment option)

While any aquatic facility team member is welcome to become a Water Safety Instructor, certified lifeguards are highly

encouraged to assume this role. Water Safety Instructors (WSI’s) must be certified through the American Red Cross and are responsible for teaching Learn to Swim classes.

WSI staff typically have more work hours available to them each week than non-WSI staff, and WSI’s earn an additional $1.00/hour for all shifts.

Employees who pursue Red Cross WSI certification may be eligible for educational reimbursement for the WSI course fee. For Educational Reimbursement Policy info, contact Recreation Department staff.

WATER SAFETY INSTRUCTOR JOB SUMMARY:

(Duties may include, but are not limited to the following)

Plans, organizes, and implements class teaching outlines, methods and goals that support the general teaching outlines provided by the American Red Cross Learn to Swim Program. Adapts teaching approach to match the experience and abilities of the participants. Organizes and directs activities of assigned students to provide high quality instruction for all students.

Establishes positive public relations with parents/guardians of class students helping them recognize and understand swimming safety, skill development, and achievements. Resolves simple public complaints in matters related to swimming instruction and refers other complaints to the supervisor.

Enforces pool safety standards and facility operational rules for all individuals using the facilities.

Completes and submits records and documentation of completed lessons to the Aquatics supervisor and the American Red Cross.

Minimum Requirements

Must be at least 15 years of age.

Proficient communication skills, both verbal and written

Proficient in interacting with people of various ages from diverse backgrounds

Available to work a wide variety of shifts including mornings, afternoons, evenings and weekend shifts Physically fit, strong, agile and dexterous

Excellent leadership and public relations skills Decision-making skills

Self-confidence and initiative Professional attitude and appearance

CERTIFICATIONS:

Required: American Red Cross Lifeguarding (Including Deep Water) with CPR/AED for Professional Rescuers and First Aid   certification must be obtained before the start of employment. (Must be age 15 or older in order to obtain this certification.)

Must be at least 16 years of age.

Prior experience in aquatic venues preferred.

Proficient communication skills, both verbal and written.

Proficient in interacting with people of various ages from diverse backgrounds. Available to commit to teaching two-week sessions of swim lessons (8 30-min lessons)

CERTIFICATIONS:

Required: American Red Cross Water Safety Instructor certification must be obtained before the start of employment. (Must be age 16 or older in order to obtain this certification.)

Additional Information:

This recruitment may be used to fill up to 20 supplemental positions (limited term, no benefits) working 20-40 hours per week.
