The Suffolk County Attorney’s Office is seeking to hire attorneys for its Extreme Risk Protection Unit (ERPO) located in Riverhead, NY.

About The Extreme Risk Protection Unit (ERPO):
The ERPO Unit is a specialized unit representing the Suffolk County Police Department in ERPO hearings in Suffolk County Supreme Court.  The Unit focuses on keeping guns away from individuals who are at high risk of using them to harm someone else or themselves.  The Unit handles over 1,400 cases a year.

This Assistant County Attorney role requires someone who has integrity and a commitment to public service and justice. The Attorneys will appear in Supreme Court handling Temporary Extreme Risk Protection Order hearings applications along with other related matters.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Handling individual caseloads

  • Daily court appearances in Supreme Court

  • Knowledge of civil hearings and Civil Rules and Procedures

  • Legal research in connection with memoranda of law, law briefs, motion practice, review of case law

  • Drafting and submission of motions

  • Appeal motion practice in the Second Department

  • Preparations of witnesses and case review for hearings

  • Review of Firearm Return Applications including hearing participation

  • Reports to Deputy County Attorney
