Job Title: Sheet Metal Shop Programmer
Job Summary
The Sheet Metal Shop Programmer is responsible for creating, optimizing, and maintaining CNC programs for sheet metal fabrication equipment including laser cutting machines, punch presses, press brakes (metal benders), and related machinery. This role works closely with engineering, production, and quality teams to ensure accurate, efficient, and cost-effective manufacturing processes.
Key Responsibilities
- Develop CNC programs for:
- Laser cutting machines
- Turret punch presses
- Press brakes / metal benders
- Other sheet metal fabrication equipment
- Interpret engineering drawings, blueprints, and 3D CAD models.
- Create flat patterns and nesting layouts to maximize material utilization.
- Optimize tool paths for efficiency, quality, and reduced cycle times.
- Select appropriate tooling for punch and brake operations.
- Verify programs through simulation software and test runs.
- Troubleshoot programming and production issues on the shop floor.
- Collaborate with engineers and production supervisors on manufacturability improvements.
- Maintain program documentation and revision control.
- Ensure compliance with quality standards and safety procedures.
Required Qualifications
- High school diploma or GED (technical degree preferred).
- 3+ years of experience in CNC programming for sheet metal fabrication.
- Strong understanding of laser cutting, punching, and forming processes.
- Proficiency with CAD/CAM software (e.g., AutoCAD, SolidWorks, or similar).
- Experience with nesting software and material optimization.
- Ability to read and interpret technical drawings and GD&T.
- Strong mathematical and problem-solving skills.
- Familiarity with tooling selection and setup for press brakes and punch presses.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with ERP/MRP systems.
- Knowledge of lean manufacturing principles.
- Understanding of metal types, gauges, and forming tolerances.
- Forklift certification (if applicable).
