Layout Fitter-Welder will be a single classification that applies to all welders in vessel fabrication (including touch-up), vessel reglassing, and jacket weld. Within the overall classification there will be three skill groupings, or hierarchies of skills, one for each major work center. 

 

The three skill groups and the rate potential of each is as follows:


Fabrication:

RC 11 - Set-up, all of old job #22, T-up repair, SMAW of x-ray quality, grinding operations as listed below.  

Ability to train in set-up or touch-up.

 

RC 13 - RC 11 functions above plus TIG, FCAW, and manual MIG processes. Set-up. Nozzle welding, on or off positioner, x-ray quality. Grinding operations as listed above. All layout. All duties previously contained in jobs 22-27. Trains others. Able to solve production and quality problems with little supervision.

 

Additional skills - X-ray repair. Automatic SAW and machine GMAW. C/S to S/S, S/S to S/S, and inconel qualified. Make or assist in making templates and fixtures. All Cell One functions including grinding, small head layout, nozzle swage and trim as required for single operator completion of vessels at Cell One.

 

RC 14 - All of above. Ability to direct the efforts of others within the cell or department.

 

Jacket Weld:

RC 12 - Set-up as described in old job # 30. Grinding operations as listed. All SMAW processes.  Trains others. Set-up problem-solving ability. Able to solve production and quality problems with little supervision.

 

RC 13 - SMAW, FCAW, TIG, GMAW manual. Jkt set-up as required. All layout. Able to solve production and quality problems with little supervision. Follows all current procedures for production, quality, and safety.

 

Additional skills - Overhead welding. Welding on glass. Operation of large automatic. Carbon steel to stainless, stainless to stainless, and inconel qualified. All small jacketing cell operations including grinding and jacket hydro of small vessels as required for single operator completion in cell.  Makes or assists in making templates and fixtures.

 

RC 14 - All of above. Ability to direct the efforts of others within the department.

 

Reglass:

RC 11 - Entry level. Set-up as above. All grinding operations as below. SMAW, FCAW of X-ray quality. Jacket cut-off, other operations on reconditioned materials 

  

RC 13 - All duties previously performed under jobs 22-27.  Set-up of all components as in fabrication above.  SMAW, TIG, FCAW. X-ray quality welding. Grinding operations as listed above. All layout. Trains others. Able to solve production and quality problems with little supervision.

 

Additional - X-ray repair, all aspects. Hand-forming of special parts as required for proper fit. Carbon steel to stainless, stainless to stainless, Inconel welding qualifications. Installation of all patches in all configurations.

 

RC 14 - All of above. Able to direct the efforts of others within the department.

 

The above descriptions of the RC13 levels for each skill group within the new classification list a group of basic skills, which are required for entry into the classification, followed by another group referred to as "additional." Although not all members of the group will be able to perform all of the additional skills, at least at first, everyone is required to know some of them and to learn the others as time permits and production/customer needs require.

 

All members of the group will follow all current standard operating procedures. All members are responsible for the quality of their workmanship and must follow all safety and housekeeping procedures and work in a safe manner at all times. All members of the group will train others in the various functions.

 

Light grinding operations are included in the layout welder-fitter job. Grinding that may be required of all members of the class in any department include:

 

  • Corrective grinding as required before tacking or welding a joint. Responsibility for the correct preparation of the joint is assumed by the act of welding.
  • Backgrinding of tack welds. Interpass cleaning.
  • Backgrinding of nozzles or patches after backgouging or cutting out.
  • Adjustment of bevels or taper by cutting and/or grinding as needed for correct fit-up in head set-up and jacket set-up areas, or in head or shell nozzle or patch set-up.
  • Prep grinding of torch cut surfaces prior to welding or tacking components.
  • Use of grinder to remove rust, scale, spatter, flux, or other contaminants from surfaces.
  • Grinding and dyechecking internal to x-ray or dyecheck or leak repair.
  • Any and all grinding necessary in the process of repairing defective or cosmetically substandard work of the welder's own making.

 

Responsible for quality, safety and housekeeping in their job assignment and follows current SOPs.

 

Certifications/Requirements:  Crane Operation, Tow Motor, Welding

 

Housekeeping:  Keeps area clean and puts tools away
