Laser Operator II plays a critical role in the manufacturing process by maintaining continuous feed of material to fabrication. Reporting directly to the Night Shift supervisor, this autonomous role sets up and operates the Bystronic laser cutting machine with standards of excellence and technical proficiency to produce sheet metal components with precision while minimizing material waste and machine downtime. This full-time Laser Operator II position is 100% on-site in Rock Falls, Illinois, and eligible for insurance benefits on the 1st day of the month following date of hire. Work schedule is Sunday through Wednesday from 8:00 p.m. to 6:00 a.m. Responsibilities and Essential Functions Operates laser cutting machine to produce sheet metal components with standards of excellence for safety, quality, efficiency, productivity, and accuracy. Performs proper start up and shutdown procedures to ensure safety and machine longevity. Sets up equipment cutting parameters for material type and thickness, selects proper gases and nozzles, and places material securely on cutting bed to maintain precision and prevent damage. Ensures material is free of debris while handling properly and carefully to ensure consistent cutting quality and avoid damage. Performs first-piece, in-process, and final quality inspections. Troubleshoots minor machine malfunctions by diagnosing and resolving issues and escalates urgent issues to direct supervisor without delay. Records time accurately to customer jobs by utilizing the ERP system. Operates and uses overhead hoist (with crane) and rigging techniques as well as powered industrial trucks, including motorized pallet jacks, to safely and properly load, unload, lift, and maneuver material. Leads by example and prioritizes safety and compliance such as completing training requirements timely and wearing personal protective equipment. Performs other relevant duties, tasks, assignments, and projects, upon request or as business needs require. Physical Demands and Work Environment The information below describes physical activities and surroundings an individual may encounter while performing primary responsibilities and essential functions of this position. Physical Demands: Constant standing with repetitious hand and finger movements to use and operate laser cutting machine; detect, perceive, identify, observe, inspect, and assess laser cutting operations; express and exchange information in-person. Constant moving/traversing and positioning self to reach overhead and at or below the shoulder; move and position objects up to 50 lbs. Work Environment: Constantly works in manufacturing setting on the shop floor with exposure to fluctuating temperatures and noise levels at or above 100 decibels on average. Working on the shop floor requires safety glasses, hearing protection, and safety footwear with metatarsal guard. Minimum Requirements Qualifications High school diploma, GED, or equivalent required. Two (2) years’ previous experience with machine operation or metal fabrication in manufacturing required. Ability and knowledge to use sound judgement and logical reasoning. Ability, knowledge, and skill to maintain confidentiality of sensitive information including, but not limited to customer specifications. Ability, knowledge, and skill to demonstrate professionalism and use respectful communication with employees at all levels within the organization as well as external stakeholders. Ability, knowledge, and skill to manage multiple priorities with competing deadlines. Ability and knowledge to apply basic skill and proficiency using ERP/MRP system.
