About the Role:

As a Tow Truck Technician, you will play a critical role in ensuring the safe and efficient recovery and transportation of vehicles in a variety of situations, including breakdowns, accidents, and illegal parking enforcement. Your expertise will be essential in operating and maintaining tow trucks and related equipment to provide timely roadside assistance and vehicle recovery services. You will work closely with dispatchers, law enforcement, and customers to coordinate towing operations while adhering to safety regulations and company policies. This role demands a strong mechanical aptitude, problem-solving skills, and the ability to work under pressure in diverse weather and traffic conditions. Ultimately, your efforts will contribute to minimizing vehicle downtime and enhancing customer satisfaction through professional and reliable service delivery.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Appropriate state driver’s license with a clean driving record.
  • CDL (commercial drivers license) is a plus
  • 1–2 years of experience as a mechanic, service technician, or equipment repair technician (automotive, diesel, heavy equipment, or similar)
  • Basic knowledge of mechanical, electrical, and hydraulic systems.
  • Ability to use standard hand tools, power tools, and shop equipment safely.
  • Ability to read and understand basic repair instructions, diagrams, and equipment manuals.
  • Experience using fabrication tools such as grinders, welders, and cutting torches (training acceptable if limited experience).
  • Ability to lift 50–75 lbs. and perform physically demanding tasks as required.
  • Strong work ethic, reliability, and willingness to learn specialized tow truck systems.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Previous experience working on tow trucks, wreckers, rollbacks, or other recovery vehicles.

  • Welding certification or formal training in fabrication or mechanical repair.

  • Hydraulic system certification or hands‑on training.

  • Automotive or diesel technician schooling (ASE or equivalent certifications).

  • Experience working within a dealership, manufacturing, or upfitting environment.

Responsibilities:

  • Understand and apply operational knowledge of tow trucks and all related towing equipment, including mechanical, electrical, hydraulic, and body systems.

    Perform routine inspections, preventative maintenance, and safety checks to ensure all tow trucks meet operational readiness standards and comply with federal, state, and company safety requirements. 

    Diagnose, repair, and install tow truck components, including: 

    • Hydraulic systems (winches, booms, wheel lifts, stabilizers, etc.)
    • Electrical systems (lighting, wiring harnesses, control systems)
    • Mechanical and body systems (frames, decking, toolboxes, lift systems)
  • Inspect, troubleshoot, and repair towing bodies and mounted equipment for light-, medium-, and heavy-duty tow trucks. 

  • Operate heavy-duty fabrication tools and equipment, including grinders, welders, cutting torches, drill presses, and sheet metal bending machinery to perform custom fabrication, reinforcement, or repair work. 

  • Conduct detailed diagnostics using appropriate tools and techniques to identify equipment failures, worn components, or system malfunctions. 

  • Document all work performed including repairs, parts used, inspection findings, and recommended future servicing. 

  • Collaborate with service advisors, parts staff, and management to ensure efficient workflow and timely completion of repairs. 

  • Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work environment in accordance with company policies and OSHA standards. 

  • Stay current with industry practices related to towing equipment technology, repair techniques, and safety procedures.
