Position Summary

The QC Technician plays a critical role in maintaining product quality and consistency by conducting laboratory testing, analyzing data, and supporting production operations. This position performs physical, chemical, and color evaluations of raw materials, in-process batches, and finished products to ensure compliance with company specifications and quality standards. The QC Technician works closely with Production, Technical, and Quality teams to support continuous improvement, product performance, and customer satisfaction.

Key Responsibilities

Quality Control & Testing

  • Perform qualitative and quantitative testing of raw materials, intermediates, and finished paint and coating products.
  • Evaluate product characteristics including viscosity, density, gloss, tint strength, sag resistance, flow and leveling, pH, and other performance properties.
  • Utilize and maintain laboratory instruments and testing equipment, ensuring proper calibration and operation.
  • Conduct batch testing and assist in making production adjustments to maintain product specifications.
  • Monitor shelf-life and stability testing programs, including oven-retained sample evaluations.

Color Matching & Product Evaluation

  • Perform color matching using spectrophotometer technology and CIELAB/CMC data analysis.
  • Prepare and maintain production drawdowns and color standards for quality comparison and record retention.
  • Analyze competitive products and document physical and performance characteristics.

Laboratory Operations

  • Prepare laboratory batches of water-based and solvent-based coatings and accurately document findings.
  • Maintain laboratory cleanliness, organization, and readiness of equipment and work areas.
  • Ensure proper handling, storage, and disposal of materials in accordance with company policies and regulatory requirements.

Quality & Continuous Improvement

  • Support investigation and resolution of customer complaints through retain sample analysis and reporting.
  • Assist with internal quality initiatives and continuous improvement projects.
  • Participate in recycling and sustainability programs as assigned.
  • Support facility safety programs through routine inspections and compliance activities.

Qualifications

Education & Experience

  • High School Diploma or GED required.
  • Technical school training in chemistry, coatings, laboratory sciences, or a related field preferred.
  • Associate's or Bachelor's degree in Chemistry, Materials Science, or a related discipline is a plus.
  • Previous quality control or laboratory experience preferred.
  • Experience in paints, coatings, or chemical manufacturing highly desirable.

Technical Skills

  • Basic understanding of chemistry, analytical testing, and laboratory procedures.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications, particularly Excel and Word.
  • Experience with spectrophotometer systems, computerized color matching software, and ERP systems such as BatchMaster is a plus.
  • Ability to accurately collect, analyze, and document test results.

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to stand, walk, bend, reach, and perform laboratory duties for extended periods.
  • Frequently use hands and arms to handle testing materials and equipment.
  • Occasionally lift and move up to 50 pounds.
  • Must possess close vision, color vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, and the ability to adjust focus.

Work Environment

  • Regular exposure to laboratory chemicals, fumes, airborne particles, and manufacturing environments.
  • Occasional exposure to moving mechanical equipment and electrical hazards.
  • Required use of appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE).
