Position Summary
The Purchasing Intern will support a strategic Material Flow Efficiency initiative focused on improving the movement of materials from suppliers through receiving, warehousing, and delivery to operations. This role will analyze current processes, identify opportunities to reduce costs and waste, and recommend improvements to enhance efficiency, streamline material movement, and ensure timely availability of materials for production and assembly activities.
The intern will work closely with Purchasing, Receiving, Warehouse, Logistics, Operations, and suppliers to evaluate current workflows, collect and analyze data, and support continuous improvement initiatives. This position provides hands-on exposure to procurement, supply chain management, logistics, inventory control, and operational excellence.
Essential Responsibilities
- Analyze material flow from suppliers through receiving, warehousing, and delivery to operations.
- Develop process maps and document current material movement and handling activities.
- Collect, organize, and analyze purchasing, inventory, warehouse, and transportation data.
- Identify inefficiencies, bottlenecks, and non-value-added activities within the material flow process.
- Evaluate inventory levels, storage utilization, replenishment practices, and material handling procedures.
- Review supplier shipment methods, order frequency, packaging, and transportation opportunities to improve efficiency and reduce costs.
- Collaborate with receiving and warehouse teams to understand material staging, delivery, and consumption processes.
- Assist in identifying opportunities to improve material availability while reducing inventory, handling, and transportation costs.
- Support implementation of material flow and process improvement initiatives.
- Track project metrics, document potential savings, and measure operational improvements.
- Create reports, presentations, and recommendations for leadership review.
- Support additional purchasing and supply chain projects as assigned.
Qualifications
Required
- Currently pursuing a Bachelor's degree in Supply Chain Management, Business Administration, Logistics, Industrial Engineering, Operations Management, or a related field.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Excel, including formulas, PivotTables, and data analysis.
- Excellent communication and organizational skills.
- Ability to work independently and collaborate effectively across departments.
- Strong attention to detail and commitment to accuracy.

During the internship, the successful candidate will:
- Document the end-to-end material flow process from supplier to point of use.
- Identify opportunities to improve efficiency in receiving, warehousing, and operational material delivery.
- Quantify potential cost savings related to transportation, inventory, storage, and material handling.
- Recommend process improvements that support operational efficiency and material availability.
- Present findings and recommendations to Purchasing and Operations leadership.
