This position supports the Planer Mill Supervisor in coordinating workflow, training employees, improving operational efficiency, and maintaining a productive work environment. The ideal candidate is a hands-on leader who thrives in a fast-paced manufacturing environment and is committed to safety, quality, and continuous improvement. Essential Duties & Responsibilities Assist the Planer Mill Supervisor in managing all daily operations within the Planer Mill. Supervise production employees during assigned shifts while promoting a safe and productive work environment. Ensure production schedules are met while maintaining company quality standards. Monitor planer mill equipment and communication maintenance needs to minimize downtime. Coordinate production flow between departments to maximize efficiency. Train, coach, and mentor employees on equipment operation, quality standards, and safety procedures. Conduct daily shift meetings to review production goals, safety expectations, and operational priorities. Monitor employee attendance, performance, and productivity. Assist with employee evaluations, coaching, corrective actions, and disciplinary documentation. Verify lumber is processed according to customer specifications and grading requirements. Maintain accurate production reports, downtime records, quality documentation, and shift logs. Identify opportunities to improve efficiency, reduce waste, and increase productivity. Work closely with Maintenance, Quality Control, Shipping, and Sawmill departments to ensure smooth production flow. Fill in for the Planer Mill Supervisor during absences as needed. Perform additional duties assigned by management. Leadership Responsibilities Lead employees by example while promoting teamwork and accountability. Foster a positive workplace culture built on respect, communication, and continuous improvement. Support employee development through coaching and hands-on training. Assist with scheduling employees and ensuring adequate staffing levels. Promote employee engagement while maintaining company policies and procedures. Safety Responsibilities Promote and enforce all OSHA regulations and company safety policies. Ensure employees will wear required Personal Protective Equipment (PPE). Conduct regular safety observations and inspections. Report accidents, incidents, near misses, and unsafe conditions immediately. Maintain excellent housekeeping standards throughout the Planer Mill. Participate in safety meetings and assist with incident investigations when necessary. QualificationsQualifications Required Minimum of 3 years of experience in a sawmill, planer mill, or lumber manufacturing environment. Previous supervisory or team leadership experience preferred. Working knowledge of planer mill equipment and lumber manufacturing processes. Strong leadership and organizational skills. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills. Basic computer proficiency, including Microsoft Office and production reporting systems. Ability to multitask and prioritize in a fast-paced manufacturing environment. Ability to read production schedules, measurements, and quality specifications. Work other job duties as required. Preferred Experience supervising in a planer mill or lumber manufacturing facility. Knowledge of hardwood lumber grading and quality standards. OSHA safety training or equivalent safety leadership experience. Bilingual (English/Spanish) is a plus. Physical Requirements Ability to stand and walk for extended periods. (12-hour Shifts) Ability to lift to 50 pounds occasionally. Frequent bending, climbing, reaching, stooping, and walking. Ability to work around moving machinery and industrial equipment safely. Ability to work in varying temperatures, dust, noise, and outdoor conditions. Ability to work on holidays and weekends as required. Work Environment This position works in an industrial lumber manufacturing environment with exposure to wood dust, loud machinery, heavy equipment, varying temperatures, and moving mechanical parts. Strict adherence to all safety procedures and PPE requirements is mandatory.
