In this role, the Licensed Practical Nurse supports providers and clinical staff in delivering high-quality patient care within a busy pain management practice. Responsibilities include rooming patients; obtaining and documenting medical histories, vital signs, and other pertinent patient information; monitoring patient flow; returning patient phone calls; administering medications as directed; assisting with diagnostic procedures and treatments; maintaining accurate medical records; stocking exam rooms; and responding appropriately during medical emergencies.

Additional duties include assisting with scheduling appointments, obtaining prior authorizations and pre-certifications, processing medication refill requests according to established protocols, assisting with a variety of clinical functions, ordering and maintaining supplies, cleaning and preparing exam rooms, and completing patient-related paperwork, including FMLA, short-term disability, and long-term disability forms. The Licensed Practical Nurse serves as an important member of the care team, helping to ensure efficient clinic operations and an exceptional patient experience.

The Licensed Practical Nurse will:

  • Prepare patient documentation and medical record in preparation for appointment.
  • Escort patient to room, obtains vitals and updates medical record, which would include a brief medical history or chief complaint, current medication, allergies, smoking status, pain status, immunization status, and all meaningful use data collection.
  • Prepare patient for examination or procedure.
  • Ensure consent is signed and dated for procedures and performs "Time out" with Physician/LIP when appropriate.
  • Assist Physician/LIP with examinations and/or procedures.
  • Administer medications ordered by Physicians/LIP and update medical record after administering medication.
  • Maintain and update accurate electronic medical record.
  • Receive and handle telephone calls to department. Assist with triaging calls under the supervision of a licensed health care professional.
  • Assist Physician/LIP with educating the patient and families.
  • Demonstrate effectiveness and courtesy in scheduling patients for appointments.
  • Ensure patient safety while handling, transporting and providing medications to patients; protects patients from various hazards, falls, disease exposure, etc.
  • Review basic physical, psychological and social needs of patients and their families.
  • Adhere to infection control policies.
  • Demonstrate ability to navigate efficiently computer software applicable to department.
  • Perform unit specific duties according to established unit-based competencies.
  • Participate in quality assurance activities.
  • Ensure appropriate supplies are on hand
  • Assure timely completion of assigned duties.

Job Requirements:

  • Graduate of accredited school of nursing.
  • Current state of Illinois LPN licensure.
  • Must be CPR certified within 3 months of hire.
  • Must be CPR certified within 3 months of hire
  • Strong critical thinking abilities
  • Requires excellent verbal and written communication and counseling skills
  • Two years clinical experience desirable
  • Preferred Experience with Electronic Medical Records and prior experience in Pain Management.
