Position Summary
The Mechanical Maintenance Superintendent is responsible for the safe, reliable, and cost-effective execution of all mechanical maintenance activities within the Pulp Mill. This position provides leadership and direction to maintenance supervisors, planners, reliability personnel, and hourly maintenance employees to ensure equipment reliability, operational excellence, and continuous improvement.
The Mechanical Maintenance Superintendent partners closely with Operations, Engineering, Reliability, and Capital Project teams to maximize asset performance, reduce downtime, improve maintenance effectiveness, and support the mill's production and safety objectives.
Job Responsibilities:
- Demonstrate safety as a core value and actively promote a culture of zero injuries.Â
- Ensure compliance with all safety policies, procedures, and regulatory requirements.Â
- Lead incident investigations, root cause analyses, and corrective action implementation.Â
- Conduct regular safety observations, audits, and field engagement activities.Â
- Drive continuous improvement in safety performance and employee engagement.Â
- Lead and direct all mechanical maintenance activities within the Pulp Mill.Â
- Manage maintenance supervisors, planners, reliability personnel, and hourly maintenance employees.Â
- Ensure maintenance work is planned, scheduled, and executed safely and efficiently.Â
- Develop maintenance strategies that improve equipment reliability and reduce costs.Â
- Monitor maintenance performance metrics and implement improvement initiatives.Â
- Drive reliability-centered maintenance (RCM) principles throughout the department.Â
- Support predictive and condition-based maintenance programs.Â
- Lead efforts to reduce unplanned downtime and improve equipment availability.Â
- Facilitate root cause failure analysis (RCFA) for significant equipment failures.Â
- Partner with Reliability Engineers to identify and implement long-term solutions.Â
- Lead planning and execution of major outages, shutdowns, and turnaround activities.Â
- Ensure outage work is completed safely, on schedule, and within budget.Â
- Coordinate contractor resources and internal maintenance teams.Â
- Review lessons learned and implement improvements following outages.
- Coach, mentor, and develop supervisors and maintenance personnel.Â
- Support succession planning and workforce development initiatives.Â
- Conduct performance evaluations and provide ongoing feedback.Â
- Promote accountability, teamwork, and continuous improvement.
 Required Experience:
- Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Engineering Technology, Industrial Technology, or related field; equivalent experience may be considered.Â
- Minimum 7–10 years of maintenance experience in a heavy industrial or manufacturing environment.Â
- Minimum 3–5 years of leadership experience supervising maintenance teams.Â
- Experience in pulp and paper manufacturing strongly preferred.Â
- Strong knowledge of mechanical systems, rotating equipment, pumps, compressors, conveyors, hydraulic systems, and process equipment.Â
- Experience with CMMS systems such as SAP.Â
- Strong understanding of maintenance planning, scheduling, and reliability principles.Â
- Proven leadership, communication, and team-building skills.Strong organizational, interpersonal, communication, problem solving and decision-making skills, as well as initiative and the ability to delegate decision making and other responsibilities.Â

Preferred Qualifications
- Experience leading major outages and turnaround events.Â
- Reliability certifications or training.Â
- Lean Manufacturing or Continuous Improvement experience.Â
- Experience in unionized manufacturing environments.
