Multi-Platform News Director

Nexstar Sacramento, a top 20 market, is seeking a dynamic leader with excellent news judgment to oversee all aspects of KTXL FOX40 news. The News Director is a people-first leader who is responsible for hiring and leading diverse teams in the execution of top-quality newscasts that make a difference in our community. The successful candidate will have a proven track record in digital-first execution. 

We are looking for a leader who can develop our talented journalists in a positive way, while supporting our innovate culture.  Candidate must be passionate about delivering news content across multiple platforms, while growing our audience. It is essential to successfully motivate and lead a team within a changing media landscape.  Reports to the Market Vice President & General Manager.

The successful candidate will have a proven record with breaking news, enterprise and investigative reporting, knowing how to drive audiences using our digital products. The candidate must have a proven track record of developing and implementing new processes, as well as building a collaborative environment across the news department creating innovative concepts.  In addition, have demonstrated skills in recruiting, developing and retaining high-level talent, managing resources, creating and executing research based strategic plans and growing new opportunities in our multi-media landscape. 

Responsibilities:

  • Create and execute strategic plans to grow our audience.
  • Actively promote cultural change, drive innovation to support new ways of working with an eye on continuous improvement for a high quality, professional, consistent, and cohesive newsroom. This includes working collaboratively and communicating proactively, understanding the needs of and soliciting/monitoring feedback from managers/employees to develop a culture of two-way feedback.
  • Supervise Assistant News Director, Executive Producers, Producers, and anchor talent.
  • Provide strategic direction for day-to-day news coverage, breaking news, special projects, investigative reporting, special event coverage across all distribution channels, including creating content for OTT channels.
  • Collaborate with team to operationalize research.
  • Grow and develop a diverse staff, including identifying, recruiting, and retaining top talent.
  • Interview, hire, coach and develop employees; plan, assign, and direct work, appraise performance, reward and coach as needed.
  • Address complaints and resolve problems promptly.
  • Interpret and execute research from multiple research sources to provide the best news product for the Sacramento market.
  • Prepare and execute department operating and personnel budgets.
  • Review news programs for the critique of production, news content and overall performance. 
  • As an active, engaged member of the community, seek out individuals and groups to determine their news needs and interests.

Qualifications

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE:

  • Bachelor degree in Mass Communications, Journalism or Broadcast preferred
  • Prefer to have at least 7 years’ experience in newsroom management
  • Experience around breaking weather & news, major news, investigative and enterprise journalism.
  • Strong organizational skills and ability to effectively manage multiple projects simultaneously and adjust to shifting priorities.
  • Solid business acumen, with understanding of all content platforms.

Salary starts at $175,000 for well qualified candidates.
