DESCRIPTION:

Under the direction of the Park Superintendent and/or Park Foreman, the Park Maintenance II position performs a variety of skilled and semi-skilled tasks in the irrigation, maintenance, and repair of parks and recreational facilities. Additionally, this position assists in the general maintenance of park grounds, trees, and landscaped areas, and does related work as required. This position may require flexible work hours and a weekend schedule.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS STATEMENT: Essential functions and duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:

Inspect, repair, maintain, and modify existing irrigation systems.
Diagnose and trouble-shoot irrigation problems with field irrigation equipment that may include controllers, irrigation heads, valves, and related systems.
Program and manage irrigation controllers.
Operate trenching equipment and/or backhoe jack hammers in digging irrigation line trenches.
Assist in the rebuilding and/or installation of new irrigation valves, controllers, pumps and backflows.
Perform maintenance service to irrigation systems.
Repair different types of water pipes such as PVC, galvanized, copper, steel, and cement.
Check, maintain, and repairs pool related systems. Maintain chemical logs of all pool chemical checks and perform various pool related maintenance activities.
Brush, clean, and sweep pool paster and gutter.
Asist in parks and facility operation such as cutting grass and weeds, mow, edge, blow, prune, rake, clean grounds, and load grass and brush.
Perform preventative maintenance.
Perform special projects and related duties as required.
Perform routine inspections of District facilities and execution of required maintenance repair.
Train other employees and volunteers in their areas of work including parks and facilities maintenance methods, procedures, and techniques.
Order and stock parts and supplies as necessary.
Maintain District equipment and follow safety guidelines.
Work alone, as a member of a crew, or as a crew leader.
Assist in the opening of all parks and restrooms.
Have facilities ready prior to day’s activities.
Carry out assignments as instructed by Park Superintendent.
Must be able to perform all duties of Park Maintenance I.
Performs other related duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Knowledge of:

Park maintenance and facility maintenance.
Irrigation system installation, maintenance, controls, and repair.
Electrical wiring commonly found in irrigation systems, controllers, and time clocks.
Operational characteristics of tools and equipment used in assigned park maintenance activities.
Tree and shrub pruning and its related tools.
Turf mowing and operation of various equipment used for mowing sports fields and park facilities.
Basic principles and practices of record keeping.
Pool operation and pool chemistry and pool maintenance.
Uses and purposes and methods of general construction tools and equipment used in irrigation systems, park grounds, and recreation facilities.
Occupational hazards and safe work practices.
Construction maintenance and repair methods, including carpentry, pipe fitting, painting, electrical and cement work.

Ability to:

Repair or assist with the repair of pool systems as needed.
Independently in performing in the absence of supervision.
Learn to operate a computer as necessary to perform job duties.
Drive a District work truck to perform work throughout the District.
Organize, coordinate, and assign tasks to meet project and maintenance deadlines.
Understand and apply District and departmental policies and procedures.
Perform hard manual labor.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

Required:

Candidate must have completed the twelfth grade and possess a High School diploma or equivalent.
Candidate must have three (3) years of experience in the maintenance and repair of parks and facilities. with experience in the installation, maintenance and repair of irrigation systems found on athletic fields, and/or municipal parks.
Completion of Certified Pool Operator (CPO) or Aquatic Facility Operator (AFO) certification required within 6 months of hire.

Highly Desirable:

At least one (1) year of supervisory/lead experience is highly desirable.
Agricultural Pest Control Advisor’s License, Certified Arborist, Irrigation Auditor Certificate, and Playground Safety Inspector Certificate are highly desirable.

Desirable:

Bachelor’s Degree in Park Administration, Ornamental Horticulture, or related field is desirable.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:

Possession of a valid California Driver’s License and good safe driving record and proof of insurability are required.
Successful candidates for employment will be required to undergo a medical examination and drug screening administered by a County of Sacramento Health Services Department doctor, who will make a recommendation to the District regarding the candidate’s fitness and ability to perform the essential functions of the position.
Passing the physical examination and drug screening is a pre-requisite for employment.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

Essential functions may require maintaining physical condition necessary for bending, stooping, walking, digging, driving, moving, and operating mowers, tractors, weed trimmers and other comparable equipment for long periods of time.
May at times require physical exertion in connection with activities or carrying/lifting equipment or supplies weighing up to 100 pounds.
Most essential duties of this job are performed in an outdoor environment with exposure to varying climate and temperature conditions including exposure to sunlight, standing and walking on uneven surfaces, and exposure rain and wind, and exposure to loud noise.

Retirement - The District participates in Social Security and the County of Sacramento’s Retirement Plan (SCERS). Membership in the Sacramento County Retirement System (SCERS) (2% @ 55 1/2) for legacy members (hired prior to 1/1/2013). Reciprocity with Public Employees Retirement System (PERS). New members (hired on or after 1/1/2013 without reciprocity) (1% at age 52 increasing to 2.5% at age 67).
