Description

Job Summary: assists in nursing care and preparation of surgical patients by performance of routine and delegated duties according to standards and policies of the facility. The Surgery Technician scrubs for surgical procedures, cleans rooms, picks cases, monitors inventory and stocks OR rooms. The Surgery Technician also provides care based on the age-related needs of the pediatric, adolescent, adult, geriatric patient, with consideration of their developmental/psychosocial needs, environmental safety, educational needs, communication style, and level of understanding.

Duties:

  • Scrubbing hands and arms and donning OR attire and personal protective equipment (PPE).
  • Gathers, checks, and opens supplies and equipment needed for the surgical procedure.
  • Sets up the sterile back table and mayo stand with instruments, supplies, equipment, and medications/solutions needed for the procedure.
  • Assists the team members with gowning and gloving.
  • Assists with prepping the patient and establishing the sterile field.
  • Set-up and secure tubing, cords, and other sterile accessories.
  • Labels all medications and solutions according to established policy.
  • Handling surgical instruments and supplies and passing them to surgeon during surgery.
  • Prepares and anticipates additional instrumentation, equipment and supplies for usage during the procedure.
  • Maintains highest standard of sterile technique throughout the procedure.
  • Assists in the turnover of the rooms in order to maintain an efficient surgical schedule.
  • Assists in prepping the OR for the next patient.
  • Participates in debriefing and quality improvement practices to ensure quality patient care.
  • Assists with transferring patients to and from the operating room table.
  • Assists with positioning the patient, using appropriate equipment and anatomical principles to avoid patient injury.
  • Performs instrument, sharps, and sponge counts with the nursing staff before, during, and after the procedure. 
  • Safely transports used/contaminated instruments and supplies to the Decontamination Room.
  • Assists in the care and maintenance of instrumentation and equipment.
  • Updates and keeps accurate records of the surgeon’s preference.


Requirements

Education, Licensure and Experience

  • High School Diploma or equivalent.
  • Graduate of a Surgical Technician program or equivalent education, experience, or training.
  • Three to five years of current experience in a multi-specialty inpatient or outpatient surgery department required.
  • Certified Surgical Technician preferred.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) for healthcare required.

Required Skills and Abilities

  • Basic knowledge of anatomy.
  • Knowledge of sterilization procedures and aseptic techniques.
  • Knowledge of maintenance and care of equipment and instrumentation.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of safety precautions and emergency procedures.
  • Through understanding of surgical/endoscopy procedures.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal relationship skills.
  • Ability to perform duties effectively under stressful conditions. 

Pay Rate

$34.65 | $38.50 | $43.00
