1. Travel to funeral homes and crematories to conduct investigations and examinations to authorize cremations.

2. Investigates circumstances of deaths within Commonwealth of Massachusetts to assist in determination of cause and manner of death as well as identification of deceased.

- Request and review medical records related documents and radiographic images.

- Interview family members of the deceased, members of law enforcement, first responders, and medical professionals.

- Provide written reports directly to Medical Examiners and assist Pathologists, as necessary.

- Interact daily with OCME staff and funeral directors.

- Interact with law enforcement agencies.

- May meet with families of the deceased to confirm visual or forensic identification.

3. Travels to locations outside of the OCME to conduct external examinations, obtain photographs, and collect specimens toxicological testing from human remains.

4. Participates in daily or weekly meetings with Medical Examiner and CME or DCME staff to discuss findings of examinations and investigations conducted.

5. Provides training of new MLI staff under direction of the Chief of Investigations, as assigned.

6. Must be able to maneuver deceased remains. Ability to lift a minimum of 50lbs.

7. Other duties, as assigned.

* Must possess a valid Massachusetts Driver’s License. Offers will be made only after a thorough driving record and background check is performed. The candidate in this position will work 37.5 hours per week. Current work schedule available is Sunday through Wednesday, 7a- 5p. This position will be assigned primarily in an office setting with frequent assignments to conduct a variety of field/ cremation duties. Daily assignment could change with short notice. Reliable transportation to locations outside of the OCME is required and driving may total up to 150 miles per day depending on route assignment. State vehicles may be available but are not guaranteed, mileage reimbursement is available when using a personal vehicle. Holidays are assigned on a rotation with other MLI staff.

** Strong background in medical fields such as RN, Paramedic, EMT are desired but not required. Experience in a Medicolegal Investigation, Coroner, or other death investigation role preferred.



MINIMUM ENTRANCE REQUIREMENTS:

 

Applicants must have at least (A) four (4) years of full-time or, equivalent part-time, professional, professional internship, administrative, supervisory, or managerial experience in business administration, business management, public administration, public management, clinical administration or clinical management or (B) any equivalent combination of the required experience and substitutions below.

 

Substitutions:

 

I. A certificate in a relevant or related field may be substituted for one (1) year of the required experience.

 

II. An Associate's degree in a related field may be substituted for one (1) year of the required experience.

 

III. A Bachelor's degree in a related field may be substituted for two (2) years of the required experience.

 

IV. A Graduate degree in a related field may be substituted for three (3) years of the required experience.

 

V. A Doctorate degree in a related field may be substituted for the required experience.
