Overview

The Clerical Clinical Medical Assistant will function in both roles of providing clinical and administrative support to Providers, other healthcare professionals and patients. The role will require flexibility, adaptability, and the ability to perform multiple duties and multiple office locations within the same shift.

Primary clinical duties include completing vital screenings, recording patients’ personal information and medical history and primary administrative duties include verifying patient insurance coverage, answering telephones, scheduling appointments and collecting co-payments upon completion of patients visit while adhering to confidentiality standards when working with patients.

Responsibilities

Clinical

  • Prepares patients for examinations by taking and recording vital signs, updating medical records, and recording details regarding the reason for visit.
  • Assists providers during examinations as needed.
  • Answers phones, refills medications, and other administrative duties as required.
  • Performs basic clinical procedures and collects/prepares laboratory specimens.
  • Perform pre charting as needed.
  • Administer medications and injections as ordered by the provider per Covenant Healthcare policies and procedures and regulatory agencies.
  • Coordinates x-rays, ultrasounds, labs, EKG’s, etc., as ordered by the provider per Covenant Healthcare policies and procedures.
  • Sterilize medical equipment and dispose of contaminated supplies in appropriate disposal containers.

Clerical

  • Verify patient demographics and insurance information.
  • Maintain an accurate schedule for all physicians and APPs.
  • Collect co-payments and other applicable fees.
  • Responsible for accuracy, discrepancies and reconciliation of patient fees (cash, checks) received.
  • Answer and direct phone calls promptly and efficiently.
  • Schedule patient appointments and triage calls appropriately per Covenant HealthCare policy and procedure.
  • Manage incoming and outgoing faxes, assist with administrative tasks such as filing, photocopying, and data entry
  • Assists with office referrals and prior authorizations.
  • Prepares and maintains accurate patient medical records.
  • Maintain inventory of medical and/or office supplies within budgetary constraints.
  • Follows regulations regarding narcotic storage and maintains medical inventory log. Assure medications have not expired.
  • Maintain a clean and organized reception area.
  • Follow infection control protocols and safety guidelines.
  • Adhere to all HIPAA regulations and maintains patient confidentiality.
  • Processes/tracks medical “release of information requests” consistent with HIPAA and other requirements.
  • Participates in staff meetings, in-service programs and continuing education activities as necessary.
  • Performs other duties as assigned and/or vary based on medical specialty.

Qualifications

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE

High School diploma and/or equivalent required,

AND

(1) a successful completion of a competency-based Medical Assistant (MA) training program required.

OR

(2) One (1) year experience in clinical (direct patient care) and/or medical (administrative patient support) required.

 

BLS certification required within six (6) months as a new hire or internal transfer.

 

 

KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS/ABILITIES

 

  • Knowledge of proper “release of information” standards.
  • Excellent oral communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Excellent organization, time management skills and attention to detail.
  • Proficiency with basic computer and typing skills.
  • Ability to remain calm in stressful/difficult situations while demonstrating sensitivity and compassion in all patient interactions.
  • Ability to work independently or as part of a team.
  • Ability to maintain confidential information.
  • Ability to properly obtain/perform the following: EKG, Tympanometry, TB testing, Waived lab testing, Vision testing, Vital signs, A.E.D use (Auto Ext. Defibrillator), BCLS (CPR), Venipuncture technique, Specimen collections, and provide patient education.
  • Knowledge of medication side effects and how to effectively communicate to patients.
  • Ability to properly administer medications, including proper dosage, proper site and proper schedule.

 

 

WORKING CONDITIONS/PHYSICAL DEMANDS

 

  • Ability to maintain regular, punctual attendance consistent with the ADA, FMLA and other federal, state and local standards.
  • Constant handling, feeling, talking, hearing, tasting, smelling, and near vision.
  • Frequent lifting up to 25 lbs.
  • Frequent standing, walking, twisting, reaching, depth perception, and field of vision.
  • Occasional lifting up to 100 lbs. or more.
  • Occasional sitting, lifting, carrying, pushing, pulling, stooping, kneeling, crouching, squatting, crawling, and far vision.
