GENERAL SUMMARY OF POSITION: The Health Care Assistant is responsible for providing
health services for the Millet Learning Center students with health care needs as delegated or
assigned. This position will assist in the provision of a positive educational opportunity for all
students by promoting a climate of health and well-being while meeting individual health care
needs of students as identified in the student’s Individual Education Plan.
ESSENTIAL JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:
1. Provides student specific health related services as determined by the physician and
assigned.
2. Provides student support for all other students in the classroom when health related
needs are met.
3. Maintains and updates medical records for students in accordance with
building/program and Michigan Department of Public Health.
4. Performs specialized health care procedures including but not limited to:
a. Feedings (oral, enteral, tube, nasogastric)
b. Catheterizations (straight and foley)
c. Suctioning (oral and nasal)
d. Other health related tasks under the delegation of the School Nursing
e. Administrator
1. Provides support to assist with the efficient operation of all nursing responsibilities.
2. Ensures that all activities conform to the district’s guidelines.
3. Reacts to change productively and handles other tasks as assigned.
4. Performs routine first aid procedures and assists in screening ill or injured children
according to established procedures.
5. Appropriately and safely operates all health equipment as required.
6. Supports the value of a healthy and safe school environment.
7. May engage in prolonged sitting or standing in the accomplishment of job
responsibilities.
8. In the performance of job responsibilities, may be exposed to bodily fluids including
but not limited to blood, mucus, gastric secretions, urine, stool, vomit, oral, and nasal
secretions.
9. Works in noisy and crowded environments and completes tasks while subject to many
interruptions.
10. Maintains CPR certification.
11. Maintains and organize health records.
QUALIFICATIONS:
1. Must be High School Graduate.
2. Basic computer skills.
3. Must have CPR Certification.
4. Certified Nursing Assistant certificate or Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) license
preferred.
5. Must have EIPA score of 3.0 or higher.
6. Must demonstrate knowledge of:
a. Signs and Symptoms of basic childhood illnesses.
b. Basic medical terms, codes, and acronyms.
c. Basic treatment for medical conditions.
7. Prior work experience with children in an educational setting is preferred.
8. Must have knowledge and demonstrate ability in the use of computers and standard
office equipment, including but not limited to Microsoft Office and Electronic Medical
Records Documentation.
9. Prior experience with tube feedings, catheterizations, and work in a wellness setting
preferred.
10. Willingness to be trained in medical procedures delegated by the School Nurse
Administrator.
11. Must be able to manually move, lift, carry, pull, or push heavy objects or materials up
to fifty (50) pounds in the course of performing essential job responsibilities.
12. Must be able to stoop, bend, and reach in the course of performing essential job
responsibilities.
13. Must be able to multitask in a fast-paced environment.
14. Ability to work well with staff, parents, and students of special education.
15. All applicants who are conditionally considered for employment, as a final step in the
