RESPONSIBLE TO: Principal and Assistant Principal of the Millet Learning Center
SUMMARY OF POSITION: To provide and supervise total classroom activities for special education students for the purpose of providing an opportunity for them to grow physically, socially, emotionally, and intellectually. Instructional areas included, but are not limited to, functional academics, self-help skills, social skill training, communication, productivity and leisure.
ESSENTIAL JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Provide and utilize instructional plans, strategies, methods, materials and techniques that best meet the needs of individual students.
- Provide the leadership and direction of classroom assistants working with students.
- Responsible for the maintenance, disciplinary and instructional activities in the classroom, in transit, and in other school settings where no other professional is in charge.
- Familiarity with non-assertive discipline.
- Have an in-depth understanding of special education students.
- Participate in IEP’s.
- Meet with parents at scheduled conferences.
- Attend required workshops and in-services.
- Able to work as part of a team.
- Able to keep all students, parents, and staff information confidential.
- Able to keep a positive attitude in working with students, parents, other staff members, and community members who visit the Millet Learning Center School or programs.
- Demonstrate competency in technology.
- Cooperate with teachers, students, and administration.
- Demonstrate the ability and willingness to provide behavioral modifications when needed.
- Ensure a safe environment for students at all times.
- To meet and greet visitors in a positive, helpful manner.
- Willing to receive additional training to improve job skills.
- Other duties as assigned by the supervisor.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
- Must have full or be able to obtain temporary approval as a Special Education Teacher of the Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) as per Michigan Department of Education Rules (340.1799):
- A special education (ASD) teacher with full approval (requires one year of experience of teaching in an ASD classroom), OR
- A special education (ASD) teacher temporary approval (requires full approval in one other area of special education and be recommended by a State Board of Education approved college or university).
- Knowledge and/or experience with children with autism spectrum disorder.
- Willing to become certified in Crisis Prevention Intervention strategies.
- Ability to communicate effectively and work successfully with parents, teachers, staff, school administrators and community/advocacy groups.
- Willingness to learn and utilize technology.
- Ability to lift a minimum of 75 lbs.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills.
- Must have an excellent attendance record.
