RESPONSIBLE TO: Supervisor of Special Education
SUMMARY OF POSITION:
To provide and supervise total classroom activities for special education students for the purpose of providing an opportunity for them to grow physically, socially, emotionally, and intellectually in order that adequate self-help, social adjustment, good planning of leisure time and satisfying usefulness may be realized for living at home or in another facility.
ESSENTIAL JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Shall provide and utilize instructional plans, strategies, methods, materials and techniques that best meet the needs of individual students.
- Shall provide the leadership and direction of classroom assistants working with students.
- Shall be responsible for the maintenance, disciplinary and instructional activities in the classroom and other school settings.
- Shall make appropriate referrals.
- Shall participate in IEPC's as indicated.
- Shall meet with parents at scheduled conferences.
- Shall attend required workshops and in-services.
- Shall develop Behavioral Intervention Plans based on Functional Behavioral Assessments.
- Shall have strong classroom management skills.
- Shall have a strong understanding of positive behavioral supports.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
- Must have full or be able to obtain temporary approval as a Special Education Teacher for students with Emotional Impairments as per the requirements as outlined under R340.1787 of the Revised Administrative Rules. Michigan teaching certificate with K-12 endorsement required.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills.
- Knowledge and/or experience with emotionally impaired children.
- Ability to work successfully with students, parents, staff, community and advocacy groups.
- Ability to work well with others as a team member in a work team environment.
- Ability to lift a minimum of 75 pounds.
- Must have good references.
- Must have a good attendance record.
