Function and Scope

 

The Process Control Engineer supports the mill’s process automation systems to ensure safe, reliable, and efficient operation of papermill and pulp mill processes. This position provides daily support and troubleshooting for PLC, DCS, HMI, VFD, and instrumentation systems, while working closely with operations, maintenance, and engineering teams to improve system performance and minimize downtime.

Responsibilities include supporting control system projects, documenting system changes, interpreting electrical drawings and P&IDs, and assisting with process improvements and equipment reliability. The Process Control Engineer is also responsible for following mill safety standards and supporting continuous operational improvement throughout the facility.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide daily mill support for PLC and DCS systems
  • Troubleshoot PLC, DCS, HMI, and VFD issues
  • Assist in troubleshooting issues with instrumentation such as: flow meters, pressure transmitters, consistency meters, and limit switches
  • Proficiently interpret and read electrical drawings and P&IDs
  • Provide support for control system projects
  • Document changes to PLC and DCS logic and communicate those changes clearly with area personnel
  • Work closely with production teams and provide support for them daily
  • Follow all safety protocols and participate in safety initiatives for the mill


Required Skills

  • 3+ years of experience in industrial/commercial control system installations and/or support
  • Engineering degree or technical certification
  • Proficiency with Studio 5000 and DeltaV programming
  • Experience with configuring HMI graphics such as FactoryTalk or DeltaV Operate Configure
  • Basic electrical and power systems knowledge
  • Proficiency with programming VFDs
  • Ability to interpret functional specifications, technical control systems documents, and electrical drawings
  • Ability to sometimes work in hot paper machine environment
  • Strong problem-solving and analytical skills
  • Team player and ability to communicate technical details effectively
