SUMMARY: The Lab Technician I is responsible for providing operational support to all aspects of the lab.  

RESPONSIBILITIES: include the following.  Other duties may be assigned at management’s discretion.

  • Maintain a safe, clean work environment by observing all local, state, and federal regulations regarding health, safety and the environment.
  • This includes all established plant and lab safety practices to ensure good housekeeping/hygiene practices are maintained.
  • Perform routine wet and instrumental chemical analyses in accordance with established analytical methods and good laboratory practices and operating procedures.
  • Prepare standard solutions, perform dilutions and calculations.
  • Follow quality control system guidelines.
  • Review standardization, quality control and sample analytical data for accuracy.
  • Review, release, and record sample results.
  • Work with computer data collection system i.e., Laboratory Information Management Systems (LIMS).
  • Assist with collecting samples in the plant as directed.
  • Review and restock chemical and equipment inventory.
  • Engage in various on-going training as appropriate and required.
  • Communicate results, problems, and priorities to production departments in a timely manner.

  • High school diploma or GED required.
  • Bachelor’s degree in chemistry or related scientific field preferred.
  • Additional coursework or certification in lab science or quality control is a plus.
  • Prior lab experience in petroleum or chemical manufacturing industries preferred.
  • Ability to work independently and follow established procedures.
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Outlook) for data entry, documentation, and reporting.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS: This position involves a combination of laboratory setting and operational activities. The role requires frequent walking, standing, and stair climbing, along with extended periods of computer use, including prolonged viewing of a monitor and typing. Employees may need to lift and carry items weighing up to 35 lbs and regularly perform bending, stooping, and kneeling. Exposure to varying temperatures and occasional work in non-office environments is expected. Adequate visual acuity for reading and data entry, as well as effective communication skills for phone, email, and in-person interactions, are essential. Employees must be able to wear all required personal protective equipment (PPE) for their work areas.

WORK ENVIRONMENT: The role is primarily performed in a laboratory setting within a renewable diesel production facility. Employees may be exposed to airborne particles, chemical fumes, flammable liquids, and other hazardous substances. Work may occasionally occur near loud equipment for limited periods of time.

NORMAL WORK SCHEDULE: This position follows a 7-day on / 7-day off schedule, working Thursday to Wednesday, 12-hour shifts. Day shift: 6 AM to 6 PM. Night shift: 6 PM to 6 AM. Designated on-call shifts, and changes in schedule will be required as operational need dictates.
