Heavy Equipment Mechanic

For 50 years, Byrne & Jones Construction has been St. Louis' premier commercial asphalt paving company, specializing in large-scale roadway, parking lot, and site development projects. We are seeking an experienced Heavy Equipment Mechanic to inspect, diagnose, repair, and maintain our fleet of asphalt paving and construction equipment. The ideal candidate has hands-on experience working with asphalt pavers, dump trucks, rollers, milling machines, and grading equipment.

Responsibilities:

• Perform routine maintenance and preventive service on asphalt pavers, trucks, rollers, skid steers, graders, and related equipment
• Diagnose mechanical, hydraulic, electrical, and engine issues
• Repair and replace defective parts, components, or systems
• Conduct DOT inspections and ensure compliance with safety standards
• Maintain detailed service records and repair logs
• Respond to field service calls and emergency breakdowns as needed
• Collaborate with the operations team to minimize equipment downtime
• Maintain a clean, safe, and organized shop environment

Preferred Experience:

• 3+ years of experience as a heavy equipment or diesel mechanic
• Direct experience working on asphalt pavers (e.g., screeds, conveyors, augers)
• Experience with dump trucks and commercial diesel engines
• Familiarity with grading equipment such as motor graders and skid steers
• Strong understanding of hydraulic and electrical systems
• Welding and fabrication experience is a plus
• CDL preferred but not required

Qualifications:

• Ability to troubleshoot and repair equipment independently
• Strong mechanical aptitude and diagnostic skills
• Ability to lift 50+ lbs. and work in varying weather conditions
• Valid driver’s license
• Strong attention to detail and commitment to safety
