General Purpose

The School-based Mental Health Specialist (SBMHS) provides school personnel with training, consultation, and implementation planning to promote mental health and well-being for school aged children and adolescents across our region. This position may also provide and oversee the provision of psychosocial and mental health care in school and office settings for selected clients and families. 

Requirements

     

Essential Duties/Responsibilities:

School Based Mental Health Specialist 

· Use the   multi-tiered systems of mental health support (MTSS) framework to partner   with school personnel to enhance mental health prevention, education, and   consultation support. 

· Complete   evidence-based needs assessments to identify opportunities in programming and   to determine school-based interventions to meeting the identified area of   need. 

· Provide   training, assistance, and consultation to schools to assist with   implementation of mental health initiatives based on data from needs   assessment and MTSS framework.

· Train   school staff on mental health initiatives. 

· Provide   consultation as needed and refer to community resources as appropriate. 

· Attend   monthly Behavioral Health Administration (BHA) SBMHS Supervision Meetings.

· Coordinate the delivery of mental health trainings and train school staff to deliver   these trainings on an ongoing basis.

· Complete all required reporting and documentation including monthly and quarterly   reports. 

· Serves as   an information resource to clinical team.

· Participates   in job-related training sessions and seminars.

· Links   client to Crisis Services when needed.

· Refers to   and coordinates with appropriate emergency services.

· Continually   assesses client’s behavioral health status.

· Provides   evidence-based intervention strategies to improve client functioning and   adherence.

· Acts as   the lead liaison between client, psychiatrist, and other key providers for   clients.

· Provide   resources as needed to encourage client’s progress in accomplishing treatment   goals.

· Collaborate   with medical providers and/or additional service providers to coordinate   care.

· Provide a   care management approach around psychosocial/behavioral health needs.

· Documents   in EHR all patient contacts and other important clinical information.

· Attends   required staff meetings.

· Maintains   prompt and regular attendance.

· Performs   other duties as assigned.


Education or Formal Training:

  •  Bachelor’s degree in psychology, mental health counseling, or human service-related field.

Experience

 • Ideal candidate will have clinical experience and training but also willing to provide training and experience under direct supervision.
