Emerald Technologies has an exciting opportunity for an SMT Operator Level III on its Saline, MI team! SMT Operator Level III is a highly experienced technician responsible for leading the surface mount technology (SMT) production line. These duties go beyond the basic operation of equipment to include advanced troubleshooting, process optimization, and training junior operators. This is a second shift role. 

 

Responsibilities: 

  • Master SMT line operation: Expertly set up, run, and program all SMT equipment, including screen printers, pick-and-place machines, and reflow ovens.
  • Provide advanced troubleshooting: Diagnose and fix complex machine malfunctions and process issues, such as component misplacement or soldering defects. The role minimizes equipment downtime by providing immediate technical support.
  • Lead process optimization: Use expertise to find ways to improve the SMT process for better efficiency and higher product yield. This includes optimizing machine programs and reflow oven profiles.
  • Mentor and train new operators: Serve as a subject matter expert and trainer, providing guidance and technical knowledge to less experienced SMT operators.
  • Conduct preventive maintenance: Perform regular, comprehensive maintenance and calibration on SMT equipment to ensure accuracy and prevent future issues.
  • Ensure quality standards: Lead quality control efforts, ensuring that all assembled printed circuit boards (PCBs) meet industry standards, such as IPC-A-610.
  • Manage materials: Oversee the proper handling and kitting of materials, including loading feeders according to the Bill of Materials (BOM).
  • Document and report: Maintain accurate and detailed records of production activities, equipment performance metrics, and process improvements.
  • Collaborate with engineering: Work closely with process engineers and other technical staff to implement process improvements and support new product introductions

QUALIFICATIONS (Education & Experience): 

  • High School Diploma or equivalent required.
  • 5+ years of SMT operator experience
  • Technical expertise: In-depth knowledge of SMT equipment, processes, and programming.
  • Attention to detail: Excellent visual inspection skills to identify defects and ensure precise component placement.
  • Problem-solving: A proactive and systematic approach to diagnose and resolve technical issues quickly.
  • Team leadership: Strong communication and mentoring skills to guide and train other operators.
  • Adaptability: The ability to work efficiently under pressure and adapt to new technologies and products.
  • Ability to read and follow work instructions in English
  • Strong attention to detail and willingness to learn
