Job Description:

Job Summary

The Multi-Trades Chief I serves as a highly skilled lead technician and working supervisor responsible for coordinating, assigning, and supporting work across multiple skilled trades including plumbing, electrical, carpentry, HVAC, and building mechanical systems. This position provides direct technical support to the Building Mechanic team, oversees troubleshooting and repairs, and ensures timely response to campus service needs. The role enhances operational continuity by providing cross-trade guidance, coordinating campus-wide maintenance tasks, and assisting in the development of preventive maintenance and commissioning processes. The Multi-Trades Chief I also supports daily and evening shift operations and ensures consistent communication and workflow across teams.

Authority and Accountability

Reports To: Manager, Building Trades / Special Projects - Keith A Brown 
Direct Reports: May provide day-to-day direction to Building Mechanics, Trades Technicians, and contractors (no formal supervisory FTEs).
Budgetary Responsibility: Provides recommendations for materials, equipment, and project needs; supports tracking of labor and materials in AIM.
Authority: Assigns work tasks, provides technical guidance, validates repair methods, and serves as a campus subject-matter expert for multi-trade troubleshooting.

Required/Minimum Qualifications

EDUCATION: High School Diploma or GED

EXPERIENCE: Four years progressively responsible experience in the trade(s) where assigned to include at least one year in a lead or supervisory capacity. In a Non-Supervisory/Leader position, 5 years of experience is required.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS/ABILITIES: Comprehensive knowledge of and skill in the methods and techniques of the trade(s) where assigned; of the OSHA regulations related to the trade(s) area. Thorough knowledge of and skill in the practical application of electronics, hydraulics, and mechanics as used in maintenance work; of basic mathematics including area, volume, weights and the practical application of fractions, percentages, ratios and proportions; of the care and storage of equipment and supplies used in the area where assigned. General knowledge of the principles of supervision in the maintenance trades. Skill in the use and maintenance of the tools and equipment of the trade(s) where assigned. Ability to read, interpret, and work from blueprints, schematics, drawings, and specifications; to communicate effectively both orally and in writing; to lead and train skilled and unskilled employees in assigned trade(s) work; to prepare summaries and reports; to work in, on, around, over and under fixed equipment and machinery; to work from ladders and scaffolding; to manipulate heavy equipment, tools, and supplies and/or exert force up to 70 lbs.; to concurrently manipulate multiple controls on machinery and equipment; to work in hazardous or irritating environments, confined spaces, and adverse weather or temperature conditions; to wear and work in personal protective equipment.

Except for qualifications established by law, additional related experience and formal education in which one has gained the knowledge, skills, and abilities required for full performance of the work of the job class may be substituted for the education or experience requirement on a year-for-year basis with 30 college credits being equivalent to one year of experience.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Completion of a vocational or technical trade program.
  • Experience in a higher-education or large institutional facilities environment.
  • Knowledge of building automation systems, commissioning practices, and campus maintenance workflows.
  • Experience assisting with project coordination and contractor oversight.
  • Demonstrated ability to support training, onboarding, or mentoring of trade staff.

The position is a full-time, non-exempt state role with comprehensive benefits.
