Job Description:
The Assistant Controller supports the Divisional Controller in overseeing construction and development accounting, maintaining strong financial controls, and ensuring timely, accurate reporting across Lotus Company’s real estate portfolio. This role partners closely with accounting, FP&A, tax, project management, and corporate stakeholders to support disciplined financial operations, project-level visibility, and continuous improvement.
Responsibilities:
- Financial oversight and accounting standards: Assist the Divisional Controller with establishing and maintaining accounting practices, standards, and procedures for construction and development accounting, ensuring compliance with U.S. GAAP, company policies, and project-level reporting requirements.
- Reporting, compliance, and controls: Support budgeting, forecasting, and variance analysis in coordination with FP&A; oversee general ledger activity, reconciliations, cash activity, and project accounting review; ensure timely and accurate internal and external financial reporting; support Corporate Accounting with regulatory compliance and tax filing activities; and help develop, implement, and monitor internal controls, including audit finding resolution and coordination with external CPAs and internal stakeholders.
- Process improvement and systems management: Lead or support initiatives to improve accounting processes, reporting workflows, and financial system controls. Assist with system upgrades, integrations, user access reviews, and troubleshooting for accounting platforms. Review and approve draw submittals, monthly, quarterly, and annual close deliverables, and project cost analyses.
- Team leadership and development: Supervise, mentor, and develop accounting team members, including Accounting Managers, Senior Accountants, and Staff Accountants, as assigned. Coordinate training, goal setting, workload management, and performance feedback while fostering a culture of accountability, compliance, accuracy, and continuous improvement.
- Stakeholder collaboration: Partner with FP&A, tax, corporate accounting, project management, development, and construction to support business objectives, improve financial visibility, and resolve accounting and reporting issues.
Qualifications:
- Technical skills: Strong proficiency with construction accounting systems, including Sage or similar platforms; advanced Excel skills; working knowledge of Yardi Voyager, Procore, or comparable real estate and project management systems; and a solid understanding of U.S. GAAP, job costing, draw processes, reconciliations, journal entries, and financial reporting.
- Soft skills: Analytical mindset, high attention to detail, strong organizational skills, effective communicator, and collaborative team player.
- Compliance and systems: Experience setting up and maintaining entities, projects, cost codes, workflows, and reporting structures within accounting systems; ability to troubleshoot accounting platform issues and coordinate with internal users, system administrators, and external support resources.
- Preferred competencies: Experience with construction draws, lender reporting, project cost reviews, audit support, internal control documentation, and process standardization in a growing multi-entity organization.
Education & Experience:
- Bachelor’s degree in accounting; CPA, CMA or progress toward certification preferred.
- Minimum of 7 years of progressive accounting experience, with preference for candidates who have experience in construction accounting, real estate development accounting, multi-entity accounting, LIHTC development, or project-based financial reporting.
- Advanced proficiency in Sage, Yardi Voyager, Procore, or comparable accounting, property management, and project management systems is preferred.
- Strong understanding of S. GAAP, multi-entity accounting, construction or development accounting, internal controls, and financial reporting.
- Proven leadership skills with the ability to manage and mentor accounting staff.
- Excellent analytical, organizational, and communication skills.
- Ability to thrive in a fast-paced, collaborative, and entrepreneurial environment.
Work Environment & Schedule:
This is a full-time, in-office position based on the 13th floor of our downtown Salt Lake City headquarters, with core hours Monday through Friday. Our office at Second + State offers expansive views of the city and surrounding mountains, access to a private balcony, and close proximity to a wide range of restaurants, cafés, and amenities within walking distance. The building also provides an on-site fitness facility and covered, year-round parking.
