As an Albany Composite Technician you will be laying-up, braiding or filament winding of composite materials in accordance with customer and company specifications and requirements. Other duties of the Composite Technician include:

 

  • Bonding a variety of materials (composite, metal, or laminate) assemblies, parts, skins, components, equipment or structures into semi-finished or finished products.
  • Operating a laser or pattern cutter, assisting with cutting and kitting materials.
  • Completing lay-ups using measuring instruments per shop orders, blue prints or laser ply projector.
  • Sanding, burring and smoothing over areas, applying sealing resins to cut or exposed edges.
  • Vacuum bagging basic shapes and sizes.
  • Operating autoclaves, hydraulic presses and ovens to complete bonding cycle. Assisting in loading autoclaves and\or ovens with the use of forklifts, cranes or handling carts
  • Completing repairs on composite, metal or laminate bonded products using inspection and rework instructions.
  • Monitoring and verifying quality of finished product.
  • Able to identify different process materials, prepregs, adhesives and resins.
  • Regular and reliable attendance is an essential function of the job
Qualifications
  • High School Diploma or GED

L2 Technicians – 2-3 years of experience in hand layup aircraft composites

Knows how to build composites:

    • Understanding of ply orientation
    • Understanding major defect types (porosity, voids, wrinkles) and how to avoid them
    • Bagging process

 

L3 Technicians – 4-5 years of experience in hand layup aircraft composites

Appreciation of part/process/material complexities and differences:

    • Out life and working life management of materials
    • Experience with multiple material resin systems
    • Experience laying over core plies
    • Awareness of NDI and inspection processes
    • Safety considerations for layup processes
